AAUA Not Against Campus Press – DSA

By Richard Aladejana

The Dean of Students Affairs at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Professor Olusegun Akanbi Matthew, has stated that the school management is not opposed to campus press but seeks accuracy, balance, and unbiased practices.

Akanbi emphasized this during a courtesy visit by the newly-inaugurated executives of the Nigeria Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ), AAUA chapter at his office yesterday.

He congratulated the new executives, commending the previous achievements of the union in contributing to the progress of the institution, stressing the roles of the press in any democratic society.

The DSA further advised the union to promote the development of the university and remain true to its ethical principles of accuracy, balance, and avoiding the spread of unverified information.

He responded to the activities of unprofessional individuals who spread false news about the institution, adding that unregistered persons or unions would not be allowed to operate on campus.

"Any group or organization not registered under the Student Affairs Unit will not be allowed to operate on this campus," Akanbi said.

Speaking, the new president of the union, Emmanuel Oluwadola, promised partnership with the institution towards achieving development, assuring professionalism through adequate training of campus journalists from the institution.

Oluwadola added that any campus media outlets or bloggers who are not registered under the umbrella of NUCJ will not be recognised by the union, underlining the importance of journalism training before practice.

"Unlike NUCJ in other universities, it is our duty as a body to oversee the practice of campus journalism in AAUA and to safeguard freedom of the press. We train our members to uphold professional journalism practices.

"There are some anonymous individuals or bloggers who are not registered and trained by NUCJ AAUA. Such individuals or media platforms should be held accountable for their unprofessional practices," he said.

The newly-elected 2023/2024 NUCJ AAUA executives who will lead the affairs of the union for a year include Oluwadola Emmanuel, President; Peter Emmanuel, Vice President; Aladejana Rasheed, General Secretary; Agbi Oluwafunmilayo, Financial Secretary; Fanibuyan Ayomide, Media/Graphics Designer 2 & Welfare Director; Alabi Aishat, Public Relations Officer; Fatimah Idera, Production Manager; Owonikoko Kemisola, Circulation Manager 1; Temidayo Ayodeji, Circulation Manager 2; and Agboola Comfort, Media/Graphics Designer 1.
