READ THE OPINIONS FROM THE STUDENTS ON HOW TO FORESTALL OR STOP ACCIDENT ON AKUNGBA ROADS

Written by Comrade Barryfem

Due to the past sardonic occurrences of accidents claiming lives and properties, the students have been so much concerned and pleading that a final solution should be brought to the situation.

The students' union has been doing all she could to make sure the lives of her people are safe. Ranging from spiritual aspects (prayer walks and other spiritual undertakings) to physical actions(mounting barricades, proposing speed limit signs, and others).

After the last accident that happened around Adefarati, on Ikare to Akungba road, it was facilitated that the Governor of Ondo state H.E Rotimi Akeredolu visited the scene of the accident. People poured out their plights and the union was duly represented by her President, Comrade Obagunwa Supreme. The Governor promised to find a lasting solution to stop the road accident on Akungba roads.

As efforts are being made, both spiritual and physical, to stop the evil, another accident occurred some days ago, which claimed some lives(3).

The Office of the Public Relations Officer noted with concern, the opinions of the students and laid a platform on 'a channel for people to say their minds on what they think should be done to stop accidents on the roads.

Majority of those who answered suggested the mounting of bumps on the road. But another Comrade, Baba Shade suggested that bumps might not be a lasting solution because the topography of the town would make things worst. He said " Bumps won't stop this itch, it will even become worse you can't put bumps on a hilly road, it will be so bad, let the government dredge the road like that of Ikare and make it double lane and this madness will stop"

Some people also opined that the road should be duallised, this was part of the solutions discussed with the state Government.

In one of the opinions yesterday, a student who goes by the name Uthman Albdulazeez also suggested in full words below;

"Good evening Com. BarryFem.

Yeah, by accessing and studying the nature of the accidents that occurred.

Firstly, those accidents were caused by a vehicle coming from Ikare road, and the major cases are overspeeding and brake failure. Looking at this, it tells us that the first solution to bring in should be on how to reduce road users' speed to a certain limit, within the student's vicinity.

Mind you leader, the causing of accidents are not limited to trailers only, cars, bus, bike kills too. All should be considered when providing a solution.

My suggestion is this, we can first raise the awareness for speed reduction by erecting display boards to notify motorists that students are on the road and they shouldn't speed beyond a certain speed.

The second suggestion is by molding speed breakers on the road, starting as far as Ikare road if possible to Iwaro junction.

I think we should be having hold-ups is better than losing students.

No one knows who's next.

I do commend your administration under the leadership of Com. Supreme. For putting the students at heart always but I think there is still more to be done.

I hope my suggestions will be looked at, help to pass this to the President and I wish to have his contact also.

Thanks, Aluta Parrot."

In conclusion, we want to state it emphatically, that the union is very concerned about how to stop the lugubrious happenings, to protect and promote the students' interests and fight for their rights.

Coupled with the measures taken by the union, it shall be ensured that proper attention is paid to the road for a lasting solution.

Most importantly, let's not stop praying against evil occurrences in our land.

Stay Safe!

SUG Never Agreed With Shuttle Drivers To Charge N50- Barryfem

SUG PRO, Comrade Oluwafemi Adegbeyin

Toluwalope Adebayo

The Adekunle Ajasin University Student Union has reiterated it is not in support of the increment of shuttle fares from 30 naira to 50 naira.

This was stated in a phone interview with the Public Relations Officier, Comrade Oluwafemi Adegbeyin, also known as Barryfem, this afternoon.

This is in corroboration of a statement released yesterday by the SUG President, Comrade Oluwasegun Obagunwa, describing the actions of the shuttle drivers as extortion, and stating that the union would wade into the situation.

According to Barryfem, the Union yesterday arrested some of the drivers, after which a meeting was held with them.

He added that another meeting has been scheduled to finalize their agreement.

Barryfem said " We got complaints from the students that shuttle drivers are charging them #50 per drop, and our agreement with the shuttle drivers during the first semester examination period was #30 naira per drop. At the time, we said if there would be any change, It would be decided in another meeting, but to our greatest surprise, any time students boarded shuttles, they will tell them the SUG agreed to the new fare. Which SUG? We only have one SUG in this school, and we didn't make any agreement that it should be #50 naira.

"So, that was why moved out en masse yesterday to arrest some of the drivers, although we didn't go to the police station. This was to show students that we aren't in support of this increment to 50 naira per drop. We also had a meeting with them yesterday. Another meeting will be coming up soon to finalize the issue. So, we will let the students know the final agreement.

He further stated that he envisaged the shuttles drivers have embarked on a strike, as students have reported that there were no shuttles available on campus this morning.

Friday Omosola

The Ekiti State University (EKSU), Department of Agriculture has been declared winner of the National Association of Agricultural Students Southwest Zonal Convention debate.

The debate which was part of the NASS 2021 convention activities, was held on yesterday at Obasanjo Multi-purpose hall (OBJ) of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko.

According to the judges, Ekiti State University scored 119.5 points to defeat her closest opponent, Obafemi Awolowo University who scored 114.0 points, Olusegun Agagun University of Science and Technology with 112.5 points, University of Ibadan with 111 points, Federal University of Oye Ekiti scored 105 points, while Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko scored 75 points.

In their arguments for and against the topic, "Nigerian Border Closure; a solution to sustainable Agriculture and domestic consumption,"  schools' representatives spoke extensively on the implications of border closure as well as the blessings.

They argued that the border closure has provided employment opportunities and aided the rapid growth of the country's economy.

However, opposers affirmed that, despite the closure of the border and the federal government's agenda of going back to the farms, foods are still smuggled into the country, and locally produced food are sold at high prices.

In an online interview with our correspondent, the NAAS Southwest Chairman, Comrade Success Olalekan Ibitoye from Adekunle Ajasin University, said the 2021 convention is aimed at imparting the Agricultural sector of this nation, as it's clear that the 16 months border-closure has done a lot of good and has caused a rapid increase in the development of Agriculture in Nigeria.

He said, "We now eat Nigerian rice all over the country, which means the border closure has improved our domestic consumption of our local produce"

He added that, If the closure of the border should continue with time, and other measures to improve Agricultural Development are being put in place, Nigeria will a food-sufficient and surplus nation. Also, the Hunger percentage will be reduced to less than 0.5%.

Recall that on the 20th of August 2019, the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari ordered the closure of all borders against the importation of rice and other food crops majorly.

According to the President, it was in bid to curtail the illegal importation of foodstuffs to Nigeria.

SRC Stops Barryfem From Charging Students For Adverts

Adegbeyeni Oluwafemi

...Calls for a letter of apology

Appointment of a new mace bearer

Friday Omosola

The Adekunle Ajasin University Student Union Public Relations Officier, Adegbeyeni Oluwafemi is set to sign a letter of undertaking against charging students who want to advertise their products and services on his Whatsapp status

The order was given by the Student Representative Council during a plenary session yesterday.

This came up after students accused him of lateness in disseminating information, as well as commercializing his WhatsApp platform which is meant to be a medium for disseminating information.

Also, following a disagreement between Barryfem and a Student Representative, who is also the 200 level Class Representative of the Department of Adult Education, Comrade Peter Pan, the Nigerian Universities Education Students Association has filed a report against the PRO.

It reads, "The above mention Association writes to report AAUASU PRO Comrade(Barryfem) the honourable senators upon what transpired between Barryfem and our associates Liberian (Comrade Peter Pan) who is also a representative for Adult Education 200 level students in the faculty of Education.

"On the 9th April 2021, the AAUASU PRO in person of Comrade Barryfem mud the integrity and personality of our dear stakeholders and embarrassed our dear faculty . On that fateful day, he was involved in a conversation on WhatsApp in the group of class representatives of the institution due to some things discussed that were not sitting right with him. Then he lashed out on the class representatives of adult education 200 level in person of Comrade Peter Pan and then he(Barryfem) sent him(Peter Pan) home to Faculty and his department that he (Barryfem)is superior and no match to his faculty stakeholders".

In response, Barryfem stated he only reacted to the voice note sent to him by Peter Pan as a normal human being would do.

He said, "I overreacted when I lost my sanity as a human being".

Looking into his appeal, the Senate stated that Adegbeyeni Oluwafemi (Barryfem) should write a colorful apology letter and paste it across all the notice boards in the school, as well as sign a letter of undertaking.

The house also constituted a committee that will look into the allegation leveled against the public relations officer, and decide he should be suspended within 7 working days.

Meanwhile, following the health condition of the current mace bearer and his inability to carry out duties assigned to him, the Senate President, RT HON. Amodu Abiola has Inaugurated a five-man panel to provide a new mace bearer for the house before the next sitting.

SUG General Secretary Gets Suspended

Joelistic Joel

SRC Demands Accountability

Friday Omosola

The General Secretary of the Adekunle Ajasin University Student Union Government, Comrade Joel Taiwo, known as Joelistic Joel has been suspended for 2 months.

His suspension was announced yesterday during the Students Representative Council plenary session.

The SRC accused him of refusing to present his bank statement which was used to receive donations for the victims involved in the January 23rd accident, failing to give a breakdown of how the donations received were spent, as well as his refusal to paste apology letters as instructed by the SRC for posting a derogatory statement against students of AAUA on his WhatsApp status.

Following his suspension, he was told to hand over documents related to the office of the General Secretary to the Assistant General Secretary, Comrade Olaiya Anthony, who will be functioning in his office for the period of his suspension.

A statement released by the Student Representative Council this morning reads,

"This is to notify all AAUAITES and host community that the Gen Secretary of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko Student Union (AAUASU) Com. JOELISTIC JOEL* has been suspended ...has been suspended through the resolution of the Students Representative Council's (SRC) plenary held on the 14th day of April, 2021.

"Recalled that the General Secretary was on the 11th of March 2021 invited by Students Representative Council to explain the rationale behind the usage of his account and not the Union's Account to solicit for funds for the victims of the unfortunate accidents of the January 23rd, a function not incidental to his office nor such action backed with the approval of the SEC/SRC/Student Affairs Division as provided by S(34) (a) (IV) of the Union Constitution.

"The General Secretary cited the rigorous process of withdrawing money through the union account and the matter of urgency in the need of the solicited funds at that critical time; an explanation which was rationally considered based on _life and death_ situation.

"The SRC thereby directed the Gen Secretary to print his statement of account and submit the said statement of account to an ad-hoc committee constituted for same and give a vivid account of how the money solicited for was spent.

"Also at the same plenary session, the house addressed one of the comments made by the General Secretary months earlier relating to the reduction of the tuition fees by the State Government in which the Gen. Secretary uploaded a status on his WhatsApp platform that "ANY AAUITE THAT IS NOT CONTENTED WITH THE UNION STRUGGLE IS A FOOL, A BIG FOOL", reference to this statement was greeted with heated reactions upon being admitted by the Gen Secretary.

"Considering the fact the statement is an abuse to all AAUAITES by an officeholder duly elected by the mandates of the same AAUAITES, the Gen Secretary was then directed to write an apology letter to all AAUAITES, submit it to the SRC and paste same on all notice boards on campus within a period of 72 hours.

However, on the 14th April, 2021. The committee constituted to address the issues reported that the Gen Secretary never submitted any financial report to them nor paste any apology letter as directed on all notice boards on campus as directed by the SRC.

"Also, the SRC invitation to the Gen. Secretary to the next plenary was ignored. The committee thereby recommended immediate 2 months suspension for the Gen Secretary in which the Gen Secretary will have to present the said statement of account and breakdown of the expenses, and as well submit and paste the apology letter as earlier directed by the SRC. The said recommendation was approved and adopted by the SRC members present at the plenary.

"Upon the suspension of the Gen. Secretary, the Student Representative Council made the following resolutions:

1. _That all documents related to the office of the General Secretary in his care be handed over to the Assistant Gen Secretary_

2. _That the Assistant General Secretary takes over the position of the Gen Secretary for the two months._

3. _That the impeachment process of the Gen Secretary will commence if the condition given by the SRC is not met within the said two months.

Efforts to get the reactions of Joelistic Joel was futile, as his number wasn't reachable and messages sent to him on Whatsapp by our correspondent were not replied as at the time of filing this report.
