AAUASU Election: SOSSA Warns SUEC Against Reinstating Disqualify 'Aspirant'

By: Abiodun Mercy and Peter Emmanuel

The Social Sciences Students Association (SOSSA), has given a stern warning to the Students Electoral Committee (SUEC) of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) against secret reinstatement of disqualified aspirant for the forthcoming AAUASU Election.

In a statement signed by the Association President, Simon Sunday, SUEC should avoid reinstating Francis Adeosun (Francophone) an aspirant from the Faculty of Law vying for the position of AAUASU President.

Recall that ECHO MEDIA had earlier reported that Francophone and another aspirant, Adekunle Ahmed Folorunsho (Adekunle) vying for the position of AAUASU Welfare Director were disqualified on the ground of 'Security Clearance'.
Fracophone, an aspirant from the Faculty of Law.

SOSSA in her public request to SUEC and the University management stated that if Francophone was reinstated, then, Adekunle an aspirant from the faculty should also be cleared to contest.

The statement read: "Greetings and well wishes to the Chairman and every other members of the Students' Union Electoral Committee (SUEC), your hardwork is noticed and won't be overlooked.
Adekunle, an aspirant from the Faculty of Social Sciences

"Without further ado, It is well known information on campus in recent days that two Students' Union Executive aspirants were publicly disqualified based on some records antagonizing their ability to contest for their political aspiration in the upcoming Students' Union election.

"Whereas, those affected aspirants are Folorunsho Adekunle from the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Francis Adeosun from the Faculty of Law who are also vying for the office of the Welfare Director and President respectively.

"However, A news has been in circulation in and outside the school campus regarding plans to overlook and privately sort out the issue of one of the affected aspirants.

"The spread of this news cannot be ignored and belittled as it seems very vital and should be treated with urgency because a rumor can eventually be a reality if it's well sorted.

"On this note, we humbly make a public request to the Students' Union Electoral Committee and the University management that if at all the S.U.E.C members are planning to reinstate the candidate from faculty of LAW in person of FRANCHOPHONE then the S.U.E.C should also reinstate the candidate from SOSSA in person of ADEKUNLE, if at all a pardon would be granted in this forthcoming hours.

"Finally, what is good for the goose is good for the gander" and everyone is expected to be treated equally under the law irrespective of Social, Financial, Political, or Economic status/influence."

SPECIAL REPORT: Why SUEC Disqualifies Two "Strong" Aspirants For AAUASU Election

By: Our Reporters

In the past days, the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, has been clattering with great concern and confusion on why the Students' Union Electoral Committee (SUEC) screened out two "strong" aspirants for the forthcoming AAUASU Election.

According to the screening results signed by the SUEC Chairman, Professor Olukayode Afolabi, only two aspirants were disqualified while others were cleared for the Students Union Election slated for May 4th, 2023.

The result was released following the screening exercise held on Thursday, April 27th by the SUEC to checkmate all students' political aspirants vying for various positions in the school's Students' Union apex body.

ECHO MEDIA had earlier reported that the disqualifiers included, a front-runner for the position of Students' Union President, Adeosun Oluwaseyi Francis, popularly known as Francophone, from the Faculty of Law, and Folorusho Ahmed Adekunle, popularly known as Adekunle, from the Department of Political Science, who was vying for the post of Welfare Director.

They were disqualified on the grounds of Security Clearance according to the statement obtained by ECHO MEDIA.

Security clearance

ECHO MEDIA investigation unraveled "Security Clearance '' as a document to be released by the institution's Security Unit which will state that an aspirant had no pending cases with them.

According to a source from the Unit who does not want their name on print, the Security Clearance might imply that an aspirant had once appeared before the institution's Disciplinary Committee and was involved in the vandalism of school properties.

The source said the Disciplinary Committee is under the Security Unit.

According to the source, aspirants charged with rape, examination malpractices, and other social vices can as well be disqualified.

However, AAUASU Constitution, Chapter 9, part three, article (e) stated that aspirants can be disqualified having been convicted by any court, removed from office before through misconduct, or has any pending case with the University authorities, security unit that has to do with cult-related activities, rape, vandalism, examination misconduct or other social vices.

It reads, "Notwithstanding, the provisions above, any candidate who had been convicted by any court, removed from office before through misconduct or has any pending case with the Universities authorities, security unit that has to do with cult-related activities, rape, vandalism, examination misconduct or other social vices shall not be eligible to contest for the election of the union."
A screenshot of AAUASU CONSTITUTION.

Another factor that can disqualify aspirants is being in their final year.

Constitution Disqualifies Aspirants Guilty of Security Allegations- SUEC

In an interview with SUEC Secretary, Komolafe Olaleye, he said the Constitution supersedes anybody, saying the two aspirants were disqualified in accordance with the AAUASU Constitution.

He said, "Whenever there's a screening of aspirants as stipulated by the constitution, there's a need for security clearance before aspirants can be cleared, and when we check the provisions of that Constitution, it says aspirant that has a pending case or that has been alleged to have been involved in a situation of vandalism or any vices should not be eligible for any position."

Olaleye added that for any aspirant to be cleared for contesting, there's a need for the presentation of Security Clearance issued on his/her behalf.

He reiterated as a SUEC member, he could not be able to ascertain whether the aspirants in question committed the said offense or not.

"I'm not a member of the security unit, I'm just a member of the Students Electoral Committee. By virtue of that, I may not be able to express whether they do or not, but I could recall that so many people were invited during the 2021 protest.

"The student disciplinary Committee is a Unit under the security department of the Institution. It is very important that every aspirant contesting should consult the necessary quarters to clear those aspirants in line with the provisions of the law.

"Their names were released then as part of those that were invited to explain their roles in the protest. What transpired at the panel is not known to any of us. The constitution stipulated that when someone is indicted when you have a pending case, is not about being guilty or being culpable, it is about the indictment."

I didn't commit the alleged offense- AAUA Welfare Director's Aspirant, Adekunle

Reacting to his disqualification as a candidate for the position of Welfare Director, Folorunsho Hammed Adekunle, known as Adekunle, told ECHO MEDIA he's innocent of the offense.

Adekunle confirmed that he was to face the Disciplinary Committee in 2021 following the 'no school fees, no exams' protest, letting out that on the said date, he was not a participant and never vandalized any school properties.

"On the day of the protest, I had a test and after the test, I went to my girlfriend's house. From there, I put on my phone and was told they had started the protest. There was someone who was saying that one guy who was closer to Tunji Abayomi was there in the protest, the guy said 'I will be invited to the school management very soon' Immediately I was informed, I sent the picture of where my girlfriend and I were eating to the group that I wasn't part of the protest."

He said his invitation to the panel was the handiwork of people that felt they were at the corridor of power. "When I saw the list of names to face the panel, it was just my surname and my other name 'Folorunsho Adekunle' — my name is Folorunsho Hammed Adekunle.

"On the list, my Matriculation Number and department name were not there; when I went to the department to receive the letter of invitation from the school management, they said there was none.

"Some people said I should not attend, but for clarity purposes, I went there and they asked questions about everything and I told them I didn't have any involvement. Ever since then, they didn't get back to me not until they disqualified me based on the incident."

Adekunle further added that he was never involved in anything that might tarnish the school's image, but expressed astonishment that the SUEC disqualified him.

"When the screening came, those that feel they should escape from the criticism of the student union, went ahead and wrote anonymous articles trying to use the issue against me, and I feel that's the reason the SUEC member decided to disqualify me when I was not even involved in the protest. That's what happened because I wasn't involved in any other thing that might affect the security of the school."

'I'm Not Out Of The Race, AAUASU Presidential Aspirant, Francophone

One of the two candidates competing for the post of Students' Union President, Adeosun Oluwaseyi Francis, politically known on campus as 'Francophone' who was screened out based on the outcome of the screening result, took to his social media handle to express his reaction.

Francis in a statement obtained by ECHO MEDIA urged his supporters not to panic, stressing that he has not backed off from the election race and assured to get back on track.

His words: "Dear AAUAITES, the last 24hrs have been one of the best and most precious times of my life. The calls and messages received have given me a lot of insight into how acceptable the #UTILITARIAN_LEADERSHIP PROJECT is, not just within the students but across board.

"It is our intention to represent your interest and lead a student Union that will be attractive and unique, a union that will prioritize your welfare in all ramifications. Don't panic, we are not out of the race, all hands are on deck to ensure that all gets back on track and even better.

"Dear AAUAITES, you and I know we all deserve only the best of good leadership and as such, we have chosen the #UTILITARIAN_LEADER to be the driver of our bus, be rest assured that we will arrive safely."

Francophone, however, advised all supporters to stay calm and be peaceful as well as ignore provocative words or comments and keep hope alive.

"I urge you all to stay calm and peaceful. Let us, at this point, avoid any provocative comments or words being thrown at by said to have been disqualified on the grounds of Security Clearance."

Late Shola Ilesanmi Maiden Story Clinic Kicks-off In AAUA

By: Akinyemi Yinka

Late Shola Ilesanmi's Solutions Story Clinic which allows campus journalists to pitch story ideas that solve social problems started at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).

Shola was a former investigative reporter and a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) correspondent before he was laid to rest.

The maiden story clinic which was held at Olusegun Obasanjo Multipurpose Hall (OBJ) was organised to mark Shola's posthumous 37-year-old birthday as well as immortalize him.

According to the organizers, campus journalists can pitch stories on people that solve social issues around child labour, drug abuse, illiteracy, inadequate infrastructure, inequality, and others.

Mr John Paul Akinduro, one of the organizers and a Communication Expert said Shola, who was a fact-checker with Agence France-Presse, a French International News Agency headquartered in Paris, France, during his lifetime was a journalist with a quest for details and facts.

This former Special Adviser on Digital Communications to the former Governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko reiterated that winners of the 'Shola Ilesanmi Solutions Journalism Grant' will be mentored by some international journalists for one month, to come up with impactful stories that will be published in national dailies.

Akinduro also announced that the deadline for the submission of the pitch has been extended by 10 days due to some unforeseen circumstances. He said a new email address will be provided for the submission of pitches.

A broadcast journalist at Adaba FM, Mrs Monikan Ogidan stressed the necessity of factual news writing as well as the importance of writing catchy headlines while discharging one's reportorial assignments.
Ogidan maintained that reporters should pursue genuine stories, and avoid plagiarism before sending such stories to the gatekeepers for final publication. She further stated that pitching a story means reporters have started a journey.

Another speaker, a broadcast journalist at Crest FM Ibadan, Miss Juliet Buna mentioned the basic steps in reporting a credible story.

Buna urged campus journalists to bring in fresh angles that will make their pitches stand out for quick consideration by the editors.

She further buttressed that there are thousands of stories on the editors' tables that are not catchy or creative enough to captivate their attention.

Speaking on the relevance of building contacts, Rahaman Yusuf from BBC advised student journalists to have relevant contacts to verify stories. He said one of the ways to stand out as a journalist is to have contacts that can provide credible information.

Rahaman added that journalists should not always be in a hurry to break news when they have not gathered enough facts and evidence about the incident that unfolded.

Meanwhile, present at the event are the Head of Mass Communication Department (HOD), Dr Raphael Abimbola; AAUA Public Relations Officer, Mr Victor Akinpelumi; and all AAUA National Association of Mass Communication Students (NAMACOS) Executives and stakeholders.

What Led To the Death of AAUA Fresh Graduate

By Emmanuel Oluwadola

Temitayo Ayodeji, a graduate of Physics and Electronics at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) was stabbed to death in his off-campus residence by an alleged indigene now identified as Damilola Adejumo.

The victim was confirmed dead at Aduloju Hospital along Iwaro-Akoko road where he was rushed to after the sad occurrence.

The shocking incident which happened on the 6th of April, 2023, Thursday left the school and Akungba community wondering what could have led to the murder of the innocent student.

Meanwhile, the students of the University have condemned this heinous act, calling for justice to prevail.

The intervention of the school management, students' union leaders, and security operatives halted the protest staged by the students of AAUA from resulting in violence and proceeding to the following day.

The students further took to various social media platforms to trend pictures of the perpetrator who was declared wanted. They stormed the Twitter space with the hashtag "#JusticeForTemitayo" calling for quick action.

Temitayo Did Not Owe Indigene N,1000

In a phone interview with Patrick Oluwafemi, a friend of the victim, he narrated how the incident happened as informed by eyewitnesses around the victim's off-campus hostel.

His words: "He (Temitayo) wasn't the one they (the suspect and his allies) were looking for. There was a student living in that villa that had something to do with these indigenes. They sold something to the student. It was four thousand naira. The student (not Temitayo) paid three thousand out of it, and it remains one thousand naira. The dealer sent his brother (the suspect) to collect the balance, but the student wasn't able to pay it.

"It was not the issue of cultism. There was a struggle between them as the indigene first came to intimidate the student and in the process, the student hit the indigene as said. Then, the brother (the suspect) went back to call his brother, who sent him with more teams. Policemen sent everyone away but the suspect and his associates still reinforced and came back.

"Right from the start, Temitayo wasn't in the picture at all. He was about to go and buy pure water and he saw what was going on in his villa and wanted to know what was happening. The suspect and his teams were already aggressive and the suspect stabbed Temitayo with a scissor on the side. Temitayo was rushed to the hospital. My colleagues and I went to the hospital that afternoon to check on him. We saw that he was already getting better and we need not panic.

"His side was plastered, I saw the band-aid on the injury and they even bought food for him. We saw it as a minor injury when we went back home. It was in the evening that we were called that Temitayo gave up the ghosts," Oluwafemi narrated.

He added that Temitayo was a gentle young man, easygoing, always on his earphones, and was not a troublemaker.

Students' Union Reacts

Reacting to the occurrence through a release signed by the Union's President, Comr. Ogunsanmi Kolade, the AAUA Students' Union condemned the inhumane behavior displayed by the perpetrator.

The Union confirmed that the case has been reported to the Akungba Police and their stand remains that the security services should apprehend the perpetrator. However, they urged students to remain calm and follow the directives of the Students' Union.

It reads: "The leadership of AAUA Students' Union has been reliably informed about the murderous and barbaric killing of our innocent student earlier today and we have since swung to action to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and justice is served accordingly.

"Information at our disposal, given by some eyewitnesses, reports that Temitayo Ayodeji was stabbed to death in his hostel(off campus) by some indigenes who are already on the run.

"However, the case has been reported to the Akungba Police. Our position remains that the security services should launch a manhunt immediately to apprehend the perpetrator, and we shall NOT rest until justice is served.

"We call on all students to remain calm and follow the directives of the Students' Union. Aluta Continua!"

Investigation Is Going On Says Akungba Police

A call was put through to the Akungba Patrol and Guard Officer, Mr. Tunde Olomojare to know if there are current steps taken by the Akungba Police Department to fish out the perpetrator(s).

He said: "Yes, there are steps on it, to get the culprits arrested and there is an investigation going on. You can come down to meet the DPO."

 Justice

The Public Relations Officer, of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, South-West, Comrade Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, said the association has called on the authorities to ensure that those responsible for Ayodeji’s death are brought to book.

NANS in a statement said the student area of the institution should be declared “a state of emergency”, urging all security agencies to swift into action immediately.”

In the same vein, the spokesperson for the Alale of Akungba, Oba Sunday Adeyeye, Ajimo III, Chief Alaba Yusuf, said the community had also swung into action to apprehend those behind the student’s death.

He disclosed that the King condemned the action of the indigene who allegedly stabbed the student.

The Akinrogun of Akungba land let out that the community and the university were doing everything possible to ensure the killer was arrested.

Police are investigating

The Registrar of AAUA, Gbenga Arajulu told ECHO MEDIA that Police are currently investigating the issue.

Why We Cancel 2021/2022 Academic Session — AAUA Management

By: Friday Omosola

The management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), has disclosed the reason why the 2021/2022 academic session was cancelled saying it was because of the challenges the country faced in past years.

The institution Registrar, Olugbenga Arajulu, said that Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) strikes, elections break and others have disrupted the entire arrangements.

ECHO MEDIA Interviewed the Registrar during the four-day orientation programme for fresh students which was held at Olusegun Obasanjo Multipurpose Hall (OBJ) today. He stressed that the decision was reached to enable the students to commence academic activities at the same time with the 2022/2023 academic session.

When asked about how the management plan to mobilize the 2021/2022 students for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), he said: "The University administration will work on that and it is not the student's business but our business."

He added that the management will work with the authorities of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja to ensure the students are mobilized.

"It's not an omission. At the time we released the first circular, preparations were under-way to streamline the whole thing but at the end of the discussion and deliberation, we found out that it will not be proper to ask those who were admitted in 2021/2022 to now commence their activities in the 2022/2023 academic session.
"So, it is a normal thing because of the challenges we have faced in Nigeria, ASUU for eight[8] months disrupted the entire arrangements. Lecture for another month when students could not resume activities."

Indecent Dressing Attracts Suspension – AAUA Management Warns Students

By: Boluwatife Adedokun

The management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), has cautioned students against indecent dressing and said anyone found culpable will be suspended.

During the four-day orientation programme organised for the newly admitted students of the 2022/2023 academic session, the institution's Registrar, Gbenga Arajulu announced a semester suspension penalty for an indecent dress.
The orientation programme which started today Tuesday at the 5,000-capacity Olusegun Obasanjo Multiple-Purpose Hall (OBJ) will end on Thursday, 14th of April 2023.

Olugbenga further precautioned the general students of the institution to avoid working against the management's decisions.

He said, "We have warned your senior colleagues, everything has changed, no one can go against the management's decisions. Necessity is the mother of invention.

He reiterated that it was the institution's duty to ensure students behave so that their purpose in school can be fulfilled.

According to him, there had been an entrance regulation that forbade indecent dressing.

"It is not a new implementation, it's already in force. Ignorance is not an excuse in law — that's why I said they should take note and more will still come."

Arajulu maintained that the habit of males wearing earrings, dread and dying hair, putting trousers below their waist and females exposing their sensitive parts will not be tolerated in AAUA.

He, however, said if students of the oldest University in Nigeria, the University of Ibadan (UI) can dress decently, then AAUA is no different.

"If they want to study, they will, but if they don't want to, we will send them out," he added.

Benzzy who was declared the winner at NAMACOS's first Congress held at the Mass Communication Relaxation Centre (MRC) said he will work hand in hand with the association's President and other executives.

He described his emergence as a miracle due to violence that almost marred the voting process.

His words: "I did not believe the so-called 'Cabal' would let me emerge in the first election. We[the other aspirant and I] had three votes each which resulted in an argument, but with the help of Mr. Ishola Lamidi, we were able to have a re-run election.

"At the re-run election, the outgoing Speaker cast his vote to have a winner.
"That was how I emerged. I give God the glory, as well as appreciate the Honourable that voted me in because I know it was not an easy task having an opponent that has supporters from the SUG level down to the department," he said.

While the nominations for vacant positions in the association were in progress, a member from Constituency 4, Comrade Timophilia raised a motion to send out the former president and his colleagues from the Congress which was seconded by Comrade Deji Dara from the same constituency.

They (members from Constituency 4) argued that the president and his allies, being alumni, should not be present in the new administration's congress without any tangible reasons.

However, a member from Constituency 3, Comrade Oyolola Samuel raised a countermotion that the emeritus President and his colleagues should remain, stressing that in as much they have not defended their final projects, they remain members of the association.
