RECKLESS DRIVING : AAUA STUDENTS LAMENT MGT SLOW ACTION

... Student Pleads For Urgent Action

Students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko have lamented the failure of the management of the institution to see to the reckless driving of some motorists plying the routes leading to the school gate.

They students made this known in their grievances after the death of one Yusuf Esther who was involved in an accident.

They said if the management had not treated the issue with kid gloves and measures had been put in place the life of Esther would not have been lost to the ill-fated accident.

ECHO had reported the concerns raised by the students of the institution last week before the ill-fated accident on the need for the management to put some mechanicism in place to curb reckless driving on the road.

Speaking with ECHO, some students stated that with the accident that occurred somedays ago it has become more important for the school to urgently act in order to ensure the safety of its students.

Gladys Akinlade, a 200level student of Political Science Education said the alarming rate of road accident recently in Akungba is not creating a good image for the institution and its environment.

She said "the school management should find something to do about this issue. Come to think of it, we only here of victims that die as a result of toad accident, they should also remember that some victims who are also students barely escaped death because of the recklessness of these bike men. They don't have to wait until someone dies."

''The recent incident of the death is yet to receive any immediate action from the school management. I was hoping something would be done as soon as possible to curb such thing from reoccurring," Gladys added.

Another student, Opeyemi Ayeni (400level) from the department of Computer Science said she hoped that the sad occurrence will not repeat itself again because it was a shocking one.

She opined that the bike men were at fault. In her words, “the bike men are reckless and they exhibit an annoying 'I don't care' attitude.”

She added that the school management should find away to curbing the excesses of all transport workers in Akungba.

She suggested that the school management should create awareness for the bike men and sensitize them about the dangers of reckless driving.

Fayokemi Aribisala, student of History Education, however, enjoined all students to be careful in the selection of bike men to board and also caution them when need be.

She said, ''as scared as I am now, I can't say I won't board bike again. So please let everyone be careful of the kind of bike we board, make we shine our eyes.''

"The school management should also carry out either sensitization for both the bike men and students. They should place bumps where necessary on the roads. It is ridiculous that accident rate has to reach this rate at all.''

Olamide Ogunlade, a 300 level student from the faculty of law has said the occurrence saddened the hearts of AAUA students.

She added, “I can’t really say exactly what caused the death, but from the facts I heard, I want to believe it is the reckless driving of the bike man that caused the whole mess. The government actually had failed, because ordinarily such place around market should have speed breakers (bumps). But knowing the environment we are, the bike drivers obviously do over speed, many at times drink to stupor.”

Eucharistia Ariyo (200level) from the department of Biochemistry said the death of Ayokunumi Esther was very painful.

She lamented, “the government not constructing a good road in a town where there are students, is a very bad thing. Constructing good road where students are should be their primary duty. Like Medoline road and Adefarati road are very bad. Let me say they are road to hell. Reckless driving has become a norm for the bike men these days.”

She urged students to be careful of the kind of bikes they board and also be watchful and prayerful.

AAUA TUITION FEE: THE POLICY THAT AFFECTS ELECTORAL PROCESSES

The sudden increment in the tuition fees of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA) has brought more harm than good to both parents and students.

Students who ought to participate in Students’ Union elections are overtly absent, and this is due to the unfavourable policy adopted by the school management.

The student populace has been going through some unpleasant situations ranging from unpalatable living conditions in the hostels, insecurity, and lack of students welfare among a host of others. The introduction of the new policy of “No Payment, No Voting” by the school management has taken away the tiny ray of hope students have left.

The rule prohibits students who have not paid their tuition fees from participating in the annual Students’ Union election.  Also, it stops them from contesting for any post in the Students’ Union. This negates the lofty ideal of the institution which prides itself as the 21st Century University Properly Called!

Ironically, this millennium is particularly popular for its democratic nature. Former US President, Abraham Lincoln defined democracy as government of the people, by the people, for the people. In this case, it is government of the students, by the students, for the students. When this important function is missing in a democratic society, then what we have is a society that is ruled by autocracy.

According to the Britannica Encyclopedia, “voting gives people opportunity to have their say and, through expressing partisanship, to satisfy their need to feel a sense of belonging. Even non-voting satisfy the need of some people to express their alienation from the political community.”

However, in this case, it is the school management that has decided to alienate majority of the students from the political community of the institution.

A free and fair election can only be achieved where people are given equal chance of choosing their leaders. Apart from that, people should also be given equal right to contest for leadership positions, like a popular saying goes; variety is the spice of life. The act of choosing a leader is a critical issue and must be treated as such.

Countries and nations in the past have either been destroyed or exalted due to the leaders ruling them. Much power is conferred on a leader because “to whom much is given, much is required.” Therefore, elections must be conducted with appropriate fairness.

Considering the exorbitant tuition fees, it is no surprise that many students find it difficult paying their fees. Using the payment of tuition fees as prerequisite for exercising voting rights is unfair on the part of the students because sooner or later students will pay up their fees, it’s a condition that must be fulfilled. The infringement can only be termed as a deliberate act to rob students of their franchise.

Therefore, to live up to the standard set for itself as the 21st University Properly Called! the restriction placed on students’ voting right should be removed to allow students exercise their franchise and elect leaders who will take the institution to greater heights.

It must be noted that democracy is not government of the rich, by the rich, for the rich, but of the people, by the people, for the people, hence, every bona fide student should be allowed to take part in the forthcoming election.

BUILDING YOURSELF OUT OF INFERIORITY COMPLEX

   By: Dorcas O. Aluko

Have you ever met someone who places a large emphasis on what people say about him/her?

Or an individual that feels he does not have any say or whatever his contribution is, it won't bring anything positive?

If yes, you have encountered a person with the  psychological disorder titled "inferiority complex".

Inferiority complex is a sense of belittling oneself. It is the feeling that one is inferior to others in certain aspects or the quality of being disadvantaged.

It is as a result of low self-esteem and have systematically taught people to hate themselves, their religion and even their cultural heritage.

According to Adeyemi Henry - a life coach,  "about 52% of Nigerian youth suffer from this disorder." He also claims that half of this percentage are females.

In another survey done by the Department of Psychology, Olabisi Onabanjo University, it is affirmed that about 70% of people who should suffer inferiority complex are from Poor background but have direct contact with people of high calibre overtime.

People with inferiority complex always treat people more importantly because in their words, they are unimportant.

They forget that everyone is a different combination of positive attributes and flaws and tend to subject themselves to other people's opinion which easily kill their morale. Bleaching of one's skin is a big evidence of this.

Since inferiority complex comes from the mind,  the best way to deal with it is to overcome it right from the mind.

This can be done by confronting your feelings, realising that your flaws are not as bad as you think, stop wanting to be like others, focusing on your positive attributes and building self-confidence.

Surrounding yourself with positive people is another helpful tips to kill this disease that can eat up one's life and stop one from shinning.

EXCLUSIVE: AAUA Coach Give Reasons For Poor Turnout of Students In Sports

By: Aluko Dorcas and Promise Obatyo

The gymnastic coach of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA), Mr Joseph Abuo has lamented the poor turnout of students in sporting activities.

In an interview with ECHO MEDIA, Mr Abuo said the students are meant to participate in sporting activities.

He said: “We just want students to turn up for sporting activities if not for competition but for fitness purpose."

While reacting to questions surrounding the state of the pitch, the coach pointed out that it would soon be upgraded.

“The pitch is okay because we use it for playing Dean’s cup, VC’s cup and others. Although there are problems but they can be solved. The pitch needs a little re-grassing, upgrade of facilities and proper maintenance of equipment which will be done very soon,” he added.

A team captain, Progress Afolabi who is a 200 level student of Geography and Planning Science said that the school hardly provides sporting materials for training.

He maintained that there is "low turnout of students to sporting activities because of lack of encouragement from the school management.”

He added that the school management should wake up to their responsibility.

In the same vein, 100L Roseline Adebori, a student of Health Education pointed out that basic amenities are not available.

“Our lecturers are doing a great job even without the needed equipment. The equipments we have is not balanced."

" There should be first aid in case of injuries and modern equipments for fast learning but they are not present here,” she said.

Damilola Olubeba, a student of the department of Health Education opined that the raining season is the reason why the school management is yet to repair the bad facilities.

He urged the school management to commence the repair as soon as the rainy season is over.
