RECKLESS DRIVING : AAUA STUDENTS LAMENT MGT SLOW ACTION

... Student Pleads For Urgent Action

Students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko have lamented the failure of the management of the institution to see to the reckless driving of some motorists plying the routes leading to the school gate.

They students made this known in their grievances after the death of one Yusuf Esther who was involved in an accident.

They said if the management had not treated the issue with kid gloves and measures had been put in place the life of Esther would not have been lost to the ill-fated accident.

ECHO had reported the concerns raised by the students of the institution last week before the ill-fated accident on the need for the management to put some mechanicism in place to curb reckless driving on the road.

Speaking with ECHO, some students stated that with the accident that occurred somedays ago it has become more important for the school to urgently act in order to ensure the safety of its students.

Gladys Akinlade, a 200level student of Political Science Education said the alarming rate of road accident recently in Akungba is not creating a good image for the institution and its environment.

She said "the school management should find something to do about this issue. Come to think of it, we only here of victims that die as a result of toad accident, they should also remember that some victims who are also students barely escaped death because of the recklessness of these bike men. They don't have to wait until someone dies."

''The recent incident of the death is yet to receive any immediate action from the school management. I was hoping something would be done as soon as possible to curb such thing from reoccurring," Gladys added.

Another student, Opeyemi Ayeni (400level) from the department of Computer Science said she hoped that the sad occurrence will not repeat itself again because it was a shocking one.

She opined that the bike men were at fault. In her words, “the bike men are reckless and they exhibit an annoying 'I don't care' attitude.”

She added that the school management should find away to curbing the excesses of all transport workers in Akungba.

She suggested that the school management should create awareness for the bike men and sensitize them about the dangers of reckless driving.

Fayokemi Aribisala, student of History Education, however, enjoined all students to be careful in the selection of bike men to board and also caution them when need be.

She said, ''as scared as I am now, I can't say I won't board bike again. So please let everyone be careful of the kind of bike we board, make we shine our eyes.''

"The school management should also carry out either sensitization for both the bike men and students. They should place bumps where necessary on the roads. It is ridiculous that accident rate has to reach this rate at all.''

Olamide Ogunlade, a 300 level student from the faculty of law has said the occurrence saddened the hearts of AAUA students.

She added, “I can’t really say exactly what caused the death, but from the facts I heard, I want to believe it is the reckless driving of the bike man that caused the whole mess. The government actually had failed, because ordinarily such place around market should have speed breakers (bumps). But knowing the environment we are, the bike drivers obviously do over speed, many at times drink to stupor.”

Eucharistia Ariyo (200level) from the department of Biochemistry said the death of Ayokunumi Esther was very painful.

She lamented, “the government not constructing a good road in a town where there are students, is a very bad thing. Constructing good road where students are should be their primary duty. Like Medoline road and Adefarati road are very bad. Let me say they are road to hell. Reckless driving has become a norm for the bike men these days.”

She urged students to be careful of the kind of bikes they board and also be watchful and prayerful.
