AAUASU Election: Students Lament Disqualification Of Two Frontline Aspirants

By: Abraham Isaac and Deborah Temilade.

Students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko have expressed their dissatisfaction towards the disqualification of two frontline Students Union (SU) aspirants towards the anticipated AAUASU election to be held on the 4th of May.

ECHO MEDIA had earlier reported the two candidates that were screened out– Adeosun Oluwaseyi Francis, popularly known as Francophone from the Faculty of Law vying for the position of President and Folorusho Ahmed Adekunle, popularly known as Adekunle, from the Department of Political Science for the post of Welfare Director.

According to the screening results signed by the SUEC Chairman, Professor Olukayode Afolabi, the affected students were disqualified on the grounds of security clearance.

Reacting to the situation, some students of the institution described the disqualification as injustice while others termed it as a power tussle.

A final year student and the Student Representative Council (SRC) Speaker of the Mass Communication department, Benjamin Adebayo termed the disqualification as "injustice".

"The disqualified aspirants were screened out based on the protest which emanated during the no school fees no exam policy that led to the destruction of some properties at the Senate building.

"All I would say is that this doesn't justify that the two disqualified aspirants took part in the protest, they were accused and their names were forwarded to the school Disciplinary Committee and the issue was still pending.

"So, how a two-year-old pending case could come to manhunt their ambition is surprising. They haven't been convicted of the crime they're accused of. Those 2 aspirants disqualified are just victims of this deadly game because I feel it's a deadly game from their opponents," he noted.

Adebayo however called on the appropriate body to find out if the disqualified candidates are guilty of the offences charged against them.

He added, "I'd like to suggest if the Disciplinary Committee set up then, could rise and conduct a full investigation to ascertain if these candidates are guilty or not."

In the same vein, a 400-Level student of Political Science, Ben Omolade called for transparency on the part of the Student Union Electoral Committee (SUEC).

He said, "Looking at the reason which was given by the SUEC body and the claim of Adekunle- an aspirant for the position of welfare director, he stated that something seems to be wrong somewhere.

"Since Adekunle has refused the allegation being made against him and has presented the fact that affirms that he wasn't involved in the vandalisation of the school property, Why the disqualification?"

He however advised that proper investigation be carried out to ensure that justice is upheld. Otherwise, there is a power play.

A 400-Level Law student, Abimbola Olaleye expressed her displeasure over the disqualification of Francophone.

She maintained that "Barry Tee" who once had the ambition to contest, stepped down for Francophone, his colleague to ensure full support and unified representation from the Law department.

She said, "I am confused at why Francophone was disqualified. Why now that the election is near? The SUEC body should make things clear for the students and not leave us in the dark."

In a memo signed by the SU Debate Committee which was obtained by ECHO MEDIA, the debate for aspirants will hold at the institution's old Relaxation Centre (RC) on Tuesday 2nd May at 9:00 AM.

The memo added that on the same day, the manifesto will take place at the Matriculation Ground by 2:00 PM.

Less than three days to the AAUA Students' Union election, it is yet to be asserted if the allegations charged against the two aspirants will be withdrawn to allow them to contest in the forthcoming election.
