Students living with disability at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), have organized an orientation program for fresh students at their on-campus hall of residence, Frederick Delano Roosevelt Hostel.
In the early hours of Saturday, the students' executives of the hall spearheaded the program to welcome the physically challenged students among them.
Present at the event are the Hall Managers and Staff and some newly elected AAUA Students' Union executives, the President-elect, Adekanye Mayomi, popularly known as INEC; the Senate President, Leo Omotayo; the Social Director, Fidelis Truth; and other distinguished students popularly known as Francophone, Peculiar Sam, and among others.
The guest speaker, Nasarudeen Oladele, a graduate of History and International Relations AAUA, commended the organizers for thinking outside the box to bring such a program together, despite economic challenges and other hindrances.
Oladele encouraged students aspiring for admission into the institution to keep trying their best and never believe they cannot make it into the institution because of their disabilities.
He also advised the school management to concentrate more on the welfare of these students such as providing adequate water, fixing malfunctioning toilets, and leaking roofs.
Aladegbola Joseph, the hall manager, expressed his utmost surprise towards the students' feat. He noted that the orientation would make the fresh students more familiar and feel at home on campus.
He further encouraged the new students to overstep their limits and see themselves beyond their physical appearances.
Meanwhile, Adegboye Ridwan Babawale, a 300-Level student of Mass Communication who served as the Master of Ceremonies (MC) welcomed the fresh students into their midst.
One of the organizers, a 200-Level student of Political Science said, "This program is the first of its kind, and we can say that the efforts put in place by the executives turned out to be successful. We are really happy."
For Kolawole Joseph Oluwatimilehin, a new student from the Department of Guidance and Counseling, the orientation program was worthwhile as he could not hide his excitement.
"The program is very interesting, and the organizers deserve applause. Moreover, I can say that our set is the most special," he said.
Ada Maltina, a 100-Level student of Social Studies Education who emerged as the new Miss Fresher of the hostel also expressed her happiness about the event.
She said, "Although I was anxious at first because this happens to be the first of its kind, I am happy it came out well."
