NGO To Educate Students on Menstrual Hygiene

In commemoration of the 2021 Menstrual Hygiene Day, a student-owned Non-Government Organization, Student for Start-Up, is set to organize an outreach for secondary school students today.

The outreach which will be holding at Oroke High School, Akunga-Akoko, will include an enlightenment session with students, as well as sharing of sanitary pads.

The founder, Gabriel Adeyanju explained the need to promote discussions about menstruation amongst all gender.

He noted that this will help combat the stigma associated with menstruation in society.

He said, "This outreach will be an opportunity for us to educate girls about menstrual hygiene.

"We are in a society where girls don't want it to be noticed when during their menstruation. Even when they are having mood swings, they cover it up. Unfortunately, menstrual education is not taught in schools and parents don't talk about it. "

"So, we have speakers that will be coming from different platforms to get students educated. They will make both boys and girls understand the fact that menstruation is part of life, and it is not something we should be scared or ashamed of."

Adeyanju, who is also a 400-level student of the Department of Economics Education,  further called for more advocacy in the society, to challenge the belief that menstruation is a social stigma.

World Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed on May 28.

This year's celebration is tagged, " Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health."
