Aspiring Media Professionals Are Advised To Build Required Skills- Journalist Shola Ilesanmi

The award-winning journalist, Shola Ilesanmi has urged Students of the Department of Mass Communication to be more passionate and build the necessary skills needed to fight for their space in the media industry.

Ilesanmi made this call recently during the 14th annual public lecture of the department.

According to him, being passionate about the profession makes work easier and helps to scale ordeals.

He said, "Mass Communication is a discipline that requires more skill and passion before every other thing. If what you are practicing is what you have passion for, it makes the job easier because when there are challenges, passion will keep one going and keep one from being frustrated".

He further explained that Journalism is a time-consuming discipline that also requires students to put in their best to make an edge against others.

"Smelling a story is also a very important skill every reporter should possess, and it starts from being updated about what is going on in society and being able to know what should fit in as a story from your news judgment."

He also said, Mass Communication is a broad course with different areas of specializations including print journalism, broadcast journalism, public relations, and advertising, but the fundamental necessity of every Mass Communication student is being able to write well because the writing skill is essential in all fields of specialization.

Shola Ilesanmi concluded by urging undergraduates in the field to ignore every intimidation, fight for their spaces, and get mentors who they look unto.

Other media experts at the event were Lulu Fawehinmi, Olumide Olamide popularly known as MC Lumi, Saheed Ibrahim of Hope Newspaper.
