Be Vigilant, Echo Media Advises AAUA Fresh Students

ECHO MEDIA [a long-serving media outlet] in Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) has called on newly admitted students to be vigilant as they begin their academic activities.

The students resumed the 2021/2022 academic session on the 20th of March 2023 after the break declared by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to observe Nigeria's General Elections.

The admission year of many students was affected by the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) lockdown in 2020 as well as the incessant strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

ECHO MEDIA asserted that it is normal for fresh students to feel elated when they get admission into higher institutions of learning.

On the admission of these new students, the media outlet said that staying at home for a long period does not mean new students should be victims of different 'scams' on and around the campus.

It was reportedly said that fresh students called JJC (Johnny Just Come) mostly are victims of assaults such as being duped by fraudsters, sexual harassment and among other unpleasant situations.

Research revealed that some of these fresh students fall victim when they lack proper guidance.

In an interview with the Editor-In-Chief of Echo Media, Friday Omosola, he urged AAUA new students to heighten their level of sensitivity to avoid being scammed by motorists, senior colleagues, or anybody who might disguise themselves to have illicit relationships with them.

"As newbies, they (fresh students) should be calm and choose their mentors wisely. While it is important to scan themselves, they should ensure it is done in the right way.

"Don’t be scammed, check around and ask questions from one or two persons before making any decisions?" he said.

Recently, an investigation by ECHO MEDIA revealed that Mide, a recent graduate of Industrial Chemistry, AAUA who was later identified as Olawuyiwa Ayomide Sunday allegedly duped fresh students of their money based on securing apartments for them.

The report further revealed that these fresh students often fall prey to scammers when they are in search of a suitable place to stay because they have little or no knowledge of their new environments.

Aside from Mide's scam case, some Universities in Nigeria have also experienced incidents of how returning students lured fresh students into sexual harassment with a promise to help carry out registrations and other important academic activities.

There are instances of how senior colleagues feigned as school mothers and school fathers to exploit fresh students sexually.
