The Business Of Hookup Among AAUA Students

By: Friday Omosola

7:30om till 10:00 pm are business hours for some students of tertiary institutions who engage in a form of transactional sex, tagged "Hookup". At Adekunle Ajasin University, the meeting points are major junctions in Akungba-Akoka and Ikare.

With beautiful faces dressed in skimpy dresses, heels, and bags containing necessary kits such as condoms, tissue papers, towels, wigs, perfume, cream; these students wait patiently for interested clients who often drive past.

Since the sex is transactional, clients stop to bargain prices, and one of the determinants of the fee charged is the time spent in the act. As our correspondent stood by the road to observe the process of the bargain, a young man stopped to have a chat with one of the ladies. He kicked off the conversation,  "How much is five hours, ten hours, and overnight?" His potential client responded, "I charge ten thousand for overnight, eight thousand for eight hours, and five thousand for five hours." "Too expensive", he replied as he moved In to ask a similar question. With dissatisfaction, he zoomed.

This happens every day; especially on weekends. In a haze of hormones and alcohol, groups of male and female university students meet at frat parties, bars, dormitories, and hook up for an evening of "Sex first, questions later."

As casual as the sexual encounter begins, it often ends with no strings attached; after all, it was “just a hookup.” While a hook up might mean anything from kissing to oral sex to going all the way, the lack of commitment is paramount.

According to researcher Kathleen, the university itself promotes casual relationships among students on campus. In his book, he sheds light on the differences between what young men and women want from a hookup, why freshmen girls are more likely to hook up than their upper-class sisters, and the effects this period has on the sexual and romantic relationships of both men and women after college.

In the real sense,  three types of dating relationships exist on campuses. The first is a casual relationship, where a person and another person of interest just hang out with a group of friends. The second type is one where the couple is connected at the hip, study together, eat, socialize, and do everything together.  the third type of dating relationship is hookup.

In a university setting, hooking up means having sex. Although it usually lasts only one night and between two people who are strangers or brief acquaintances. Some physical sexual interactions are typical, but they may range from kissing to sexual intercourse. Hookups are usually spontaneous and rarely result in a relationship. It's usually defined by alcohol, physical attraction, lack of expectations, financial constraint, and lack of courage to woo a ladies

Students React

According to a student who spoke with our reporter, many students don’t have the time, energy, or resources to put into a real relationship, while some just like to play the field.

A student who spoke on anonymity blamed her involvement in the practice on lack of financial support.

She said, "The job is not something I am doing with joy but due to my financial problems. After I lost my parents, there was no family member to support my academic career and I had no other option than to opt-in."

A student of the Ondo State Polytechnic revealed that the fee clients were charged based on the time spent in the act

She said, "Two years ago, they charged five thousand naira for a short period and ten thousand naira upward for overnight. Also, your money determined how they will perform sexually.

Another student of Adekunle Ajasin believed that most students engage in this form of transactional sex because of the inability of parents to provide their children's tuition fees and school materials.

However, a student who pleaded anonymity affirmed that the situation is not about parents but peer influence.

She said, "I have a friend, we both gained admission at the same time but today she's now a professional in the business, because of the bad friends she kept in her 100-level days"

When asked if anyone has been used for money rituals during the process, another student of Adekunle Ajasin University affirmed that many people have met theirs during the process.

According to her, "I have experienced it and I had to pretend you be a marine daughter, to escape. Immediately he saw me in that dramatic situation, he took off immediately."

She added that some of their clients refuse to pay the money agreed on, due to what they (guys) describe as low performance in bed.

A student said, "As for me, if I see a better job to do after school hours, I will leave hookup and my private part will rest from everyday exercises.

Way Forward

Reacting, a graduate of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Ilesanmi Agbelusi noted thaf reinforcing home trainings is the best way to caution ladies and guys against such an act.

According to him, the engagement of young people in the business can be seen as the failure of their parents.

He said, "The bible says train up a child in a way he or she should go so that when he or she is old, he or she will not depart from it."

According to him, "Many parents see nothing bad in it when an opposite sex is having a close relationship with their ward. As a result,  when such child grows old, he will like to become better in the act."

"Fishes are best bent when they still fresh. If they are forcefully bent at their dry stage, they will break."

He added that it will only take the grace of God to stop the business of hookups across tertiary institutions in Nigeria, since the school management has limited authority over what students do outside the school.

A student of Adekunle Ajasin University who was anonymous stressed the need for the government to provide employment opportunities.

According to him, this will be a breakthrough for those in the business because of money.

However, Ayodele Tobi Samuel stated that hookup is transactional and it shouldn't be portrayed wrong, as it is legalized in other countries.

"Begging for money is not a norm for them, hence, they have to do something that can fetch them cash. At least,  they are not stealing or disturbing the country."

Also, a student of AAUA said, "You can only postulate but remember you cannot shy away from inherent instinct, environmental influence, and relativistic moral nature. Coming up with a solution to hookup is like looking for a cure to corruption"

Moreover, a student who spoke on anonymity stated that it will take a long time and deliberate efforts to eradicate such form of business in our society.

"Hookup can be reduced or minimised,  but it will take a long-term process with the younger generation,  and this will take individual positive conscious efforts. Such efforts must be deliberate, starting from the family to the society and a wider space"

Categories Of AAUA Students Who Fail To Submit Their School Files Early

Akinlosotu Joy

Submission of school files and signing of bio-data are mandatory registration exercises necessary for the collection of data of newly admitted students. For students' bio-data to be signed by appropriate officers and files to be submitted to right offices, the payment of schools is required. Hence no payment, no registration.

However, it has been discovered that students who pay for their tuition fees early don't submit as early as expected. Here are categories of students that can be found guilty of this.

Those who procrastinate and complain of the stress involved in signing the bio-data form and submitting their files.

Those who believe that they can submit anytime.

Those who wait for all their friends to be ready before doing the needful.

Those who get advised by senior colleagues that they can submit and sign at any level.

Running it on my own is the best because It provides me with freedom.

What are your advice to students and upcoming artiste?

My advice to all the talented upcoming artistes is not to give up. They should up with what they do and put God first because everything needs prayer.

AKUNGBA ACCIDENT: WE FORGET THINGS QUICKLY

Scene of the January 23rd accident

David Idowu

It saddens me to walk you down this horrible memory lane of January 23rd, 2021 in the ancient town of  Akungba-Akoko in Akoko Southwest Local Government Area of Ondo State, where everything seems to be going peacefully until a death machinery in a form of a Dangote truck plunged into roadside shops along Akungba-Ikare road leaving many dead.

A bad memory to recall, promising lives were lost, beautiful roses were gruesomely plucked off before their prime. It's indeed without doubts, a heartbreaking event that sent fear down the spines of the mighty, Akungba was thrown into disarray, Ondo state mourned bitterly. The scars of this ugly accident are still illuminating on Akungba as things have never been the same on the site of the ugly occurrence.

Reacting to one of the intimate causes of this ill-fated accident, aggrieved youths of the community mounted barricades at different strategic places to prevent heavy-duty trucks from plying the Akungba-Ikare road. This development came as a relief to many because it was perceived to be a temporary solution till the Federal/State Government decides to renovate the road.

Interestingly, the barricades helped in reducing rate of accidents along the road, with the barricades at Iwaro and Okerigbo, there has been a significant reduction of traffic on the Ikare-Akungba road; in-bound Akungba.

Fast forward to three (3) months later, it's quite appalling that we've forgotten what happened, the scars of the accident is still heavily present on the hearts of every family who lost a soul to the disaster, but the people of Akungba seems to have forgotten as heavy-duty trucks are gradually coming back on the road.

Adesomoju Samuel Tobi (Sampraise), Olayemi Agboola, Ayodele Ben Ojinni, Pope Kelvin Ojinni, with their step-sister; Oluwaseun Ojinni would still be alive today pursuing the next goal of their promising lives if not for the negligence and nonchalant attitude of every concerned stakeholder who left the road unattended to. Before this ugly accident, there have been various signs that pointed to the urgency of fixing the road, yet they were defiant.

Another negligence put upon us by residents of Akungba has left our two eyes opened yet we are blind to the presence of these trucks on our roads again. About a few days back a fully loaded Dangote heavy-duty truck almost plunged into other vehicles due to brake failure while battling to mount the Okerigbo hill, it could have been another sorry story again.

As a first-hand witness of the January 23rd accident, I'll never pray at any point that Akungba should witness such again, but with the presence of these trucks, another ugly accident is bound to happen if we don't rise to the occasion and reinstate the ban on these trucks. It's visible to the blind that the road needs an expansion as it's too small to contain the traffic that's expected of a federal road, but since the Federal/State Government has refused to attend to it, we must do well in our little way to prevent a future reoccurrence.

Self-help they say; it's the best form of help. we shouldn't wait any longer before we stop these trucks from plying our roads, victims of the January 23rd accident witnessed series of previous accidents before the one that took their lives, who knows who the next victim might be?. It aches my heart to conceive the reality that we forget things quickly in this part of the world.

Redefining Failure In Our Society

David Idowu

I find it difficult to comprehend why people often criticize others whenever they are not doing well or blame people for bowing down to suicidal pressures, whereas with our own hands, we've insanely created a discriminative society with different classes base on success and failure.

Hypocritically, we often embrace success as the only true dividend of hard work, while we tend to lash our tongues against those that are not doing well without considering what could have led to their shortcomings, shamefully we usually don't hesitate to share the sentiment that they are the architect of their problems.

It saddens me that despite being the administrator of this monstrous pressurizing system, we still blame people for being submissive to the floods of this pressure. Whenever they are not doing well, we believe the best way to pull them up is to tell them how bad they've been doing or how well their colleagues/friends/peers are succeeding in that area they've been slacking to motivate them.

Amazingly, due to the dubious nature of humans, we've intentionally shunned the reality that all fingers ain't equal and that we all have different ways of expressing pains, diverse ways of coping with pressure, and a unified level of determination.

No doubts, we are different and our endurance level differs as well, it's on this note that i disagree with all hypocrites who often showcase their motivational prowess by criticizing those who resort to taking their lives as a way of ending their problems.

Sanely, suicide isn't an option but no member of this present society is worthy to criticize anyone who takes his/her own life because either consciously or unconsciously, we've contributed to their failure by shamefully embracing success as the only melody we want to dance to. I'm not saying we should start seeing failure as an option too, but notwithstanding, we must put an end to the discrimination between success and failure.

We must stop seeing condemnation as the only thing "failed" or "failing" people deserve, if we must curb the rate of suicide in our society today, we should preach it by our actions and not by the regular flexing of words we do on social media.

Reach out to that friend today, share ideas with him/her, encourage them in every possible way, meanwhile don't force them to talk whenever you notice that they are being secretive, instead show them more love and earn their trust with your goods deeds and then wait if they won't open up.

"Death no be option, but na condition make crayfish bend."

How did you develop an interest in Journalism?

My interest in journalism started and grew as far back as 2014, but before that, my secondary days have been filled with debate, writing, and speaking. So that spurred me into loving what could help the people and serve as a voice to them.

I had loved reading newspaper from childhood, especially Punch, it was the 'Efe and Jude' cartoon that caught my interest me before I started reading other news and opinions. From then, I knew I was going into journalism.

Who are your mentors in the profession?

I can't say I have a direct mentor, but I have senior journalists that I learn from. Even my colleagues on the field, I learn from them.

Mr. Lekan  Otufodunrin, former Managing Editor of The Nation now Director of Media Career Services plays a major role in my growth, Mrs. Ajibola Abisola of Premium Times Center for Investigative Journalism (PTCIJ) also plays a good role in my development. Some of my lecturers back in the polytechnic also served as a great input in my growth on the journey.

What was your International debut?

Talking about international debut, the first time I wrote for an international magazine was in 2016. I was writing for Paretingplus in Florida. It was majorly of children and parenting issues.

How many awards have you won?

Do I really have counts? Well, my journalism awards are about five while I have other awards and certificates close to 25 (all from my Secondary school till now).

I won the PALEC's  Best  Campus  Journalist in 2019, won the AAUA's Best Campus Journalist in 2019, won Youthdigest's Best Campus Editor in 2020, and others.

What were the happiest and toughest times of your career?

My happiest moment in the field of journalism is anytime I have the opportunity to write and deliver good contents

The life of a journalist is not predictable- Happy now, sad the next moment. However, I feel happy when my contents get published by reputable media organizations,  and when people contact me to help with anything in journalism.

The toughest times of the career were days I had to do stories with resources that I didn't have. I wrote some of my most beautiful stories with a very bad phone (broken screen, shaking keypad, poor battery). Those periods were tough because I had no laptop or good phones, but then, I had to deliver good stories.

What are your future career goals?

My future career goal is to become a reputable journalist of international standards and reach the peak of my career.

Who are your favourite footballers? What is your favorite club?

While growing up, I loved Ronaldinho and Kaka. They were good players and I support Chelsea even though I'm not a full-time fan but I loved them from the beginning.

What are your educational qualifications?

I have a National Diploma in Mass Communication with Upper Credit. I'm currently studying for my Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication in AAUA after which I intend to further.

Which schools are your Alma mater?

CMS School, Atijere from when I was born till 2005, Biso Cradle Nursery and Primary School, Akure in 2005 to 2006. Life Nursery and Primary, Ile-Ife from 2006 to 2007. I proceeded to Ijapo High School from 2007 to 2010.

For my Senior Class, I attended Distinct Medal College, Lagos from 2010 to 2011 for my ss1. Then I went to Assfood International College, Ketu from 2012 to 2013 where I graduated as Best Graduating Student.

I was admitted into Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo for my National Diploma from 2014 to 2015 and I proceeded to Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko for my BSc in 2017.

When did you become born again?

I became born again at a tender age. I was born into a Christian home and I have followed Christ since then. But I fully encountered God when I was in SS Class around 2012.

How did it happen?

I stayed with God for so long but I experienced him more when I was in the secondary school hostel. We had Deeper Life Pastor coming to preach to us and that was how I became more closer to God.

What is your philosophy?

I believe in the win-win philosophy that we all should win without anyone having to be sad. I believe so much in equality and equity.

What do you consider your strengths and weaknesses?

My strength lies in my ability to work with anyone and anytime. My humble nature is also a plus but God is my greatest strength and my weakness is not having the capacity to help others when they need it is my big greatest weakness. Also, working with people with no interest, as well as idleness; I hate them.

What are your hobbies? What is your favourite food?

My hobbies are writing, speaking, playing drums, singing, and volunteering.

My favourite food is pounded yam and vegetables or a blend of pupuru and marugbo.

What is your relationship status?

My relationship status is always out of the public but there is a passionate lady who is a God's gift and answer.

Beyond journalism, what are your ambitions?

Beyond Journalism, I love the military or force. Anything that places me in a situation where I can always help people. Volunteering and Music are also my focus.

What is your most cherished  experience?

One of my most cherished experiences is anytime I get the opportunity to showcase my intelligence and passion. Also, times when I had to serve humanity.

What advice do you hav for aspiring journalists?

I will advise aspiring journalists to start early. They should have a focus on why they chose journalism. It is not a profession for those who play, it is for serious-minded people because it is deep. Be passionate.

Adedokun Boluwatife, Peter Emmanuel, Friday Omosola,

Tragedy struck this morning when a 200-level student of the Department of Political Science, Adekunle Ajasin University, Fasunle Feranmi gave up the ghost after taking a poisonous substance, yesterday.

According to information gathered, she had visited her neighbor to borrow her power bank. Upon charging for about 5 minutes, Feranmi stood up and said she was leaving but would be back after her neighbor switched on her generator.

Approximately 20 minutes later, Feranmi screamed out her neighbor's name to come to her aid.

According to the President, National Association of Political Science and Public Administration Students,  Comrade Ayeni Tolu, the deceased was rushed to the hospital, where she was later transferred to the Federal Medical Center, Owo.

He said, "She was actually getting better but unfortunately the case got worse around 8 pm, yesterday. I gave them a call and she was asked to be taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Unfortunately, the ICU was occupied by someone so they couldn't take her there. I called them  this morning and she was confirmed dead around 8 am."

At the time of filing this report, it is not clear why Feranmi took her life.

While some sources claimed that she committed suicide due life to a family issue, others blamed her action on a failed relationship.

However, a member of the her department, Samuel Agbelusi stated the claims as false.

He said, "Relationship or family issues are  false rumors. We spoke with her mum earlier today and there is nothing like family issue. Regarding the Relationship, she had a boyfriend last in 100level. Just stop the rumor please"

The NAPPAS President also said, "We do not know the particular reason behind her action. We just know that she was not really the free type especially in her 200 level.

"In her 100 level days, she used to be very lively and jovial but in her 200 level days, she did away from people to some extent. We didn't know what she was going through, and based on the information gotten from her villa mates, she didn't socialize with them; she kept to herself."

On a visit to her villa by our correspondents, it was affirmed that the deceased lived a private life.

“As you can see, this lodge is a self-contained and everybody lives in their private lodges. The only relationship we have with one other is good morning and nothing more,” a lodge mate said.

However, it was gathered that the caretaker of her apartment had earlier informed students living in the lodge not to give out any information about her demise.

The President, Faculty of Social and Management, Comrade Salam Gbolahan stated that her remains had been taken to Ibadan by her family members.

Following this incident, the Students' Union Public Relations Officier, Comrade Oluwafemi Adegbeyin in a Whatsapp post urged students to always talk about their feelings.

He added that the vice-president of the union and other members can always be contacted to talk about personal and pressing issues.

"Don't let life discourage you; everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was." —Richard L. Evans

"A big part of depression is feeling really lonely, even if you're in a room full of a million people.

"TRY AND POUR OUT WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND TO PEOPLE YOU TRUST!

"Students- GIRLS/LADIES GOING THROUGH PRESSING BUT PERSONAL ISSUES, YOU CAN REACH THE SUG VICE-PRESIDENT, COMR. VALENTINA, VIA;0 8105760488

"STUDENTS(MALE AND FEMALE) may also contact any of the union leaders, we are ready to intervene! Your interest is our priority."

We Locked The Small Gate To Protect Our Properties- AAUA Mass Comm President

Department of Mass Communication's Small Gate

By: Friday Omosola, Boluwatife Adedokun

The President of the National Association of Mass Communication Students, Adekunle Ajasin University,  Adesola Ikulajolu has urged members to bear with the department over the indefinite closure of its small gate.

Ikulajolu made this known on Wednesday during an interview with Echo Media.

The NAMACOS small gate has been a route for members and non-members of the department since the collapse of its fence two years ago.

Ikulajolu noted that the gate was opened since it was a direct access to the school's small gate. However, the opportunity was abused by outsiders.

According to him, the gate was locked to protect the department's properties, checkmate activities of outsiders, and avoid harassment of lecturers and students by other students.

He said, "If you check very well, our flowers are destroyed, many properties have been stolen and we can not allow that to continue "

While noting that it might not be easy for the Mass Communication students to pass through the department's main gate, he noted that, "It is a must to ensure we are safe and our properties are safe as well.

"I have been turning since 100 level and it is not a new thing. So, we all have to embrace the habit of turning" he said.

When asked when the small gate is going to be reopened, he said, "Until the Mass Communication students begin to act with security consciousness."

AAUA SEC, SRC IMPEACHMENT SAGA

Comrade Ridwan Oseni, Comrade Adegbeyin Oluwafemi, Comrade Joel Taiwo

Friday Omosola

The Students Executive Council is a body that comprises of ten members and headed by the Union President, who oversees the affairs of the students at large, while the  Students Representative Council is the upper chamber that makes laws and checkmates the activities of the Students Union Government.

The President of the Students Representative Council is the presiding officer of the Senate, whose chief function is to guide and regulate the proceedings in the house. The Senate President is third in the students government line of succession and vested with so much power. He is assisted by the Deputy President of the Senate and other executives.

In Adekunle Ajasin University, the current Students Union Government executives have been rocked with impeachment and suspensions by the verdicts of the  Students Representative Council, resulting from allegations of his administration and negligence of duties by some of the SEC members

On the 14th of April, 2021, the Students Representative Council of Adekunle Ajasin University, led by Rt Honourable Amodu Abiola (Eja-Nla) held her first second-semester preliminary meeting, where they resolved issues and addressed allegations leveled against some members of the Students' Executive Council.

IMPEACHMENT OF THE WELFARE DIRECTOR.

On 11th March 2021, the Students Representative Council suspended the Students' Union Welfare Director, Comrade Ridwan Oseni Omosola, popularly known as Oscent, for negligence of duties, gross misconduct (unruly behaviour, verbal assault on distinguished senators), and some actions unbecoming of a Student Executive Council (SEC) member. According to SRC, this was against the constitution.

The Press release reads, " This is to notify all AAUAITES and host community that the Welfare Director of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko Student Union (AAUASU) Com Oseni Ridwan omosola, Politically Known as Oscent has been impeached by the Student Representative Council (SRC) today being the 11th day of March 2021."

"The legislative arm of the union invoked its inherent power under Section 69 of the constitution of the Student Union over the erstwhile Welfare Director's negligence of duties, gross misconduct (unruly behaviour, verbal assault on distinguished senators), and some actions unbecoming of a Student Executive Council (SEC) member".

However, Ridwan Oseni in a letter of apology sent to the house at their second semester first sitting pleaded to be pardoned, stating that such occurrence will not repeat itself. Citing that the welfare of the students is paramount and significant as a reason to be reinstated back to office.

In response, the house set up a committee to look into and examine the actions of the Welfare Director, Ridwan Oseni. Since that development, the welfare director hasn't been reinstated.

AAUATIES WELFARE

Students' welfare includes all the measures that ensure that the needs of students are fulfilled and protected economically, health-wise, and socially.

The general student welfare covers all the works done by the entire school community to support and promote the well-being of students. Each staff member does this as part of their actual duties.

The central goals are to create healthy and safe learning and school environment, safeguard mental health, counter exclusion, and promote well-being in the school community. This means support for the entire school community as well as individual support. The goal is to promote a school culture with a focus on care, consideration, and positive interaction.

The general student welfare is coordinated by an interdisciplinary student Welfare Director, and his/her efforts are intended to promote students’ learning and balanced development of their lives in general, discover barriers to learning, as well as prevent various problems and discover barriers to learning.

The welfare director  is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the joint student welfare and the general well-being of the educational institution. The students' Welfare Director also promotes the participation of students and custodians in upper secondary school activities.

Now, the big question is, how do we achieve these when the students' Welfare Director is impeached, without an arrangement for a bye-election to elect a new Welfare Director or reinstate Ridwan Oseni back to the office? AAUAites are demanding immediate answers to this question, as well as the way forward  from the Senate President and other members of the house

SUSPENDED GENERAL SECRETARY

On the 14th of April 2021, at the Students Representative Council meeting presided over by Rt Hon Amodun Abiola, the committee's report on the SUG General Secretary, Comrade Joel Taiwo's offenses was read.

His offenses include refusing to present his bank statement, which was used to receive donations for the victims involved in the January 23rd accident, failing to give a breakdown of how the donations received were spent, as well as his refusal to paste apology letters as instructed by the SRC for posting a derogatory statement against students of AAUA on his WhatsApp status.

The report reads, "The committee is to look into allegations leveled against the Students' Union general secretary which are; Violation of section 34, subsection IV of the students Union constitution and the Violation of section 34, sub VI of the students union constitution."

"In its view, the committee discovered that the General Secretary has neither presented a statement of account and breakdown of expenditures as regards the first offense and that he has refused to paste an apology letter as directed by the students' representatives Council as regards the second offense."

"After the reading, the committee proposed that the General Secretary should be suspended for two months. Pending the time, he will present the statement and breakdown of expenditure, and as well paste the apology letter as earlier directed by the Students Representatives Council."

After hearing the report, the house at large agreed that Comrade Joel Taiwo, popularly known as Joelistic Joel, should be suspended for two months.

They added that if he failed to present the statement of account and break down of expenditures, and also paste the apology letter across all the notice boards at the end of the stated period, the house will commence his impeachment process with immediate effect.

Moreover, he has directed to hand over all documents in his care  to the office of the Assistant General Secretary (AGS)

AAUAITES DOCUMENTATION

The General Secretary is the responsible authority of the union administration and apart from the administrative duties, shall carry out the following duties together with the affiliated units; to ensure that the administrative units in the union work efficiently, regularly, and harmoniously. To carry out its duties in line with the provisions of the specified laws and regulations, within the framework of the policies decided by the constitution.

Also, to organize and supervise the activities of the units affiliated with the ‘General Secretariat;  to ensure that the activities are carried out to carry out all bureaucratic and administrative services of the Union through its affiliated units, and to perform similar duties to be assigned by the president.

As at the time of filing this opinion, the students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko are awaiting either the reinstatement or impeachment of the General Secretary, Comrade Joel Taiwo.

 ALLEGATIONS AGAINST PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER

It is no longer news that a committee was set up on April 14th, 2021 by the Students Representative Council on the 14th of April to investigate the allegations leveled against the Public Relations Officer, Comrade Adegbeyeni Oluwafemi, politically known as Baryfem.

The Faculty of Education had written to the house, accusing the SUG PRO of mudding the integrity of the faculty, as well as commercializing his WhatsApp status.

The report reads, "The above-mentioned association writes to report AAUASU PRO Comrade(Barryfem) to the honourable senators, upon what transpired between Barryfem and our associates Liberian (Comrade Peter Pan) who is also a representative for Adult Education 200level Students n faculty of Education.

"On the 9th April 2021, the AAUASU PRO in person of Comrade Barryfem mud the integrity and personality of our dear stakeholders and embarrassed our dear faculty. On that fateful day, he was invoked in a conversation on WhatsApp in the group of class representatives of the institution due to some things discussed that were not sitting right with him. Then he lashed out at the class representativeof the 200 level students of the Department of Adult Education, Comrade Peter Pan, and then he(Barryfem) sent him(Peter Pan) home to faculty and his department, saying that he (Barryfem) is superior and no match to his faculty stakeholders".

In his reaction to the allegations, Comrade Adegbeyeni Oluwafemi ( Barryfem) said he only reacted to the voice note sent to him by Comrade Peter Pan as a normal human being will do. In defense of monetizing his WhatsApp status, he stated that he aimed to ensure that Students got informed, by enlarging the scope of information.

After his appeal, the Senate-house affirmed that Adegbeyeni Oluwafemi (Barryfem) should write a colourful apology letter and paste it across all the notice boards in the school, as well as sign an undertaking

He was also directed to sign a letter agreeing not to commercialize his WhatsApp platform and collect money from students who want to advertise their products.

DUTIES OF THE PRO

The Students' Union Public Relations Officer(PRO) is entrusted with planning publicity strategies, campaigns, writing and producing presentations and press releases. In addition, dealing with enquiries from the public, the press, related organizations; organizing and attending promotional events such as press conferences, open days, exhibitions, tours, and visits.

Now the question is, where are we heading to with the several verdicts given by the SRC of this current SUG administration?

SUG Election: I Solely Believe In Doing The Work- Don

Adebayo Adewale

Adebayo Adewale PKA DON is a
300 level student of the Department of Banking and Finance, and an aspirant for the post of the Student Union Government (SUG) financial secretary. In this interview with Emmanuel Peter, he talks about his mandates, opinion on godfatherism, and his passion for service.

Why are you running for the position of SUG 005 instead of other positions?

I prefer SUG 005 to other positions because I am a student of the Department of Banking and Finance, and I believe that is the best position suitable for me.

Do you currently hold any leadership position? If Yes, how is it preparing you for aspiring office?

I am not holding a political post for now, but I once served as an honourable representing my department at the faculty level, SOMMASA SRC.  Considering my belief in representing the interest of the people, I later contested for the post of SUG SRC but I lost.

Why didn’t you lose hope after you lost the election?

I see defeats as a means of going higher.

Did you institute any change or move any motion when you were a member of the SRC at the faculty level?

I can’t remember if I truly moved a motion but I never allowed the interests of my noble department to be trampled on.

What are your campaign mandates for the position of SUG 005?

I believe in transparency, accountability, and accuracy

With my knowledge as a financial student, if am allowed to serve as the financial secretary of this noble citadel of learning, my priorities are: to give accurate documentation, account properly for the financial status of the union, be transparent to AAUAites at large.

Do you know that money entices? and it is very easy to spend?

Yes, you are right but I am not enticed by money. Although, we know we can’t all be faithful in that way but have always been putting in my best to avoid that, and God has been helping me.

How do you intend to document financial reports effectively when you get to the office?

I will work hand in hand with the treasurer and the bank to get accurate financial statements, as this will aid proper documentation.

How will you tackle some of the challenges faced by the SUG financial secretaries?

The time constraint in getting information required from the bank is one of the major challenges.

Also, at times errors occur through improper input of data.

To prevent this from affecting me, I will not give room for delay in the discharge of my duties to the Nigerian student.

If you were to advise the current financial secretary, what advice would you give?

My advice for him is to improve on his good works.

What are your thoughts on godfatherism in politics?

I disagree with godfatherism, and I don’t have time for that. I solely believe in doing the work and letting God crown my efforts with success. However, for those that believe in it, it’s left to them.

Come SUG 2020/2021 election, why should AAUAites vote for you?

AAUAites should vote for me because I want to serve.

What are your words to all AAUAites and fellow aspirants of the different SUG positions?

Aspirants should remember that we are vying for this post, not for our sake but to serve the Nigerian student and it is not a do-or-die affair.

Also, we should be ready to work as one, love one another, and improve the union. This is because every position is for a little time and not everlasting, hence, whatever you do now will speak for you in the nearest future. Remember, there is life outside the corners of AAUA
