New female hostel |
By Olusegun Clarion
The fee of the newly
built AAUA female hostel has generated controversy among students living on campus.
While some opine that paying N60,000 per session
complements the adequate facilities it equipped with, others called for a reduction
in the fee, to make it affordable for all.
Our correspondent gathered that the two other female
hotels with lesser facilities; Zenith and Pioneer cost N20,000 per session.
According to a 200 level student of the Department
of Linguistics, Folorunso Ifeoluwa, the increase in the school fees is enough reason
to make the hostel affordable.
She said, " They should actually think about
the fact that the school fee is expensive. Most parents actually appreciate when
a lesser amount is paid for the allocation of the school hostel.
"I am imploring
the school authority to reduce the amount of the new school hostel because all fingers
are not equal."
On her part, a 200 level
student of the Department of Political Science Education, Oseni Perpetual said that
such a high price will make it impossible for middle-class students to enjoy the
facilities it provides.
She said, "First of all, paying N60,000 for
four students in a room is just too much, because there is the provision of
water and power supply. Our school fees alone is N100,000, it is sad we are
now paying extra N60,000 for a hostel. This amount cannot be afforded by a
middle-class person without going through some stress."
Also, a 300 level of
the Faculty of Law, Babawale Ojasope described paying such a huge amount of money
for the hostel accommodation as being unpleasant.
However, an occupant
of the new hostel, Adetunji Busola, noted that the amount paid for the hostel complements
the facilities it is contained with.
She added that it is
not compulsory for all, but made available to only those who can afford it.
She said' I acquired
it intentionally, after assessing the adequate facilities provided there. Actually, it is a modern hostel that is worth the
amount.
In an
interview with our correspondent, the Senior Porter 1 of Zenith Female Hostel,
Mr Agede stated that aside from regular water and power supply, each room is
allocated to 4 students with the following facilities: separate bed, tiled
toilet and bathroom, wardrobe, table and chair, kitchen, efficient water and
power supply.
He noted that the hostel
was never forcefully allocated to all, but chosen by students amongst
other available female hostels on campus.
Agege
further revealed that the school authority is currently working towards fencing
the hostel, in order to provide maximum security for students living
there.
Great!
