The Nigeria Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ), Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) chapter, has inaugurated the next generation of campus journalists.

Over 30 students were inducted into the union at the inauguration ceremony held on Saturday at the Mass Communication Relaxation Centre (MRC).

During the training sessions, the newly inducted members were urged to abide by the union's constitution, follow journalism ethics, and uphold professional standards.

Roland Bayode, former Editor-in-Chief of Echo Media AAUA, during his training session on "Building a Career in Journalism: Skills, Strategy, and Survival Tips," emphasised the importance of fact-checking the accuracy and authenticity of a story before publishing.

"Journalism is not just a course, it's a choice. Beyond school, you must be ready to face what comes with it, with the mindset to become a successful journalist," he said.

Bayode further stressed the importance of human interest in reporting, urging the new members to keep learning, stand for truth and professionalism, and find their niche.

The union's president, Emmanuel Oluwadola, urged the new members to always prioritize ethical and professional standards while carrying out journalism assignments.

"Today marks the beginning of an exciting chapter in your lives. Embrace the opportunities and challenges that come with being a campus journalist. You are the next generation of storytellers, truth-seekers, and change-makers. Your contributions will shape the narrative of our campus community. Write with purpose, report with accuracy, and speak truth to power."

Oluwadola assured that the union's objective is to always uphold press freedom, provided they adhere to the guiding principles and ethics of journalism.

"Be truthful, separate facts from opinions, verify facts and sources, avoid bias and personal opinions, be balanced and fair, and maintain your independence as a campus journalist, ” he urged.

The Nigeria Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ), Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko Chapter, is the umbrella body of all registered practising campus journalists and media outlets in the institution, ensuring professional practices and freedom of the press.
