COVID19: NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT IS SUFFERING FROM IGNORANCE

 Friday Omosola

Is self-isolation the best for Nigeria at the moment? Let’s look at its effects on the citizens._

It's no longer news that COVID-19 is a pandemic which has sent many to early graves and left a large number of people in pitiable states across the globe.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus in Nigeria, the government has spoken about proactive measures taken to contain the pandemic on local and international television stations and newspapers. Sadly, the measures taken by the government aren't the solution to curbing the spread of this virus in Nigeria.

Of a truth, self-isolation and social-distancing in Nigeria can be best described as the act of using hard drugs to cure malaria. This is because, Nigerians live from hand to mouth, and most of us get our daily meals from our day-to-day activities (hustle).

The practice of social-distancing and self-isolation against COVID-19 was originated by the Europeans government, who figured it as the best measures they can take to prevent more citizens from contracting the virus. This must have followed one or two comprehensive analysis together.
On the other hand, China didn’t enforce social-distancing and self-isolation amongst its citizens. Rather, they had their citizens quarantined by force, because that is what can work for them at the moment.

Apparently, when coronavirus spread to Europe, the European government looked at their societies and came up with the decision of social-distancing and self-isolation, because they understood that is the approach what will help their citizens. Let me remind you that European countries don't have communities that are without water like Nigeria, they don’t have communities without hospitals, they don't live in face-me-I-face-you-houses, some of the homeless are housed in government reserved shelters.

European countries don't have slums like where most people live in Aba, Lagos, Calabar, Onitsha etc, with gutters and shanties here and there. They don't have communities without free water and electricity. Thus, self-isolation appears easy.

Sometimes, it appears we think more intelligently than our leaders, but this is not the case; they equally know what we know. Talking about telling the truth, they have refused to tell citizens and will never tell what the truth is. This is because they benefit more from shroud politics and fraudulent leadership, which by all means makes them appear unintelligent.

Unfortunately, we as citizens have not helped matters, because we appear to be uninformed as to what our rights are and how to demand for them.

Ordering the closure of markets and restricting movements without providing sustainable funds is wicked. You think you are preventing us from being killed by the virus, but no, you are leaving us to die in the hands of hunger. We buy water to survive, some people don't even have money to buy water. It is worthy of note that the European countries that ordered their citizens to self- isolate have made available funds to help them survive in the face of this pandemic.

In Nigeria, our medical practitioners and politicians are ringing “self-isolation and social-distancing” in our ears, but how will many Nigerians survive 2 weeks without hustling and going to the streets to find their daily bread?
By forcing Nigerians to self-isolate without putting anything in their pockets, the government is only asking Nigerians to choose between death by COVID-19 or death by hunger. How have they saved us by this? This is not a response peculiar to our society.

Before they ordered the lockdown in affected states, did the government take into consideration what people living in the rural areas of the states will pass through as a result of their decision? How do they expect us to survive without food?
Nigerian leaders should be creative and stop the act of copy-cat. This is why we have remained subordinates to the white;  depending on them for everything.

In disbelief, Nigerian leaders give themselves the best in this world. They ride in the best cars, wear the best clothes,  live in the best houses, access the best hospitals in the world, have the best security, send their children to the best schools in the world. They give themselves world-class services with our commonwealth, while leaving those that gave them the mandate to serve in abject poverty and suffering.

Thankfully, It isn't past the time for us to wake from our slumber and sleep, and fight for our rights. Who said that we don’t have the right to demand for the best services from them? Who taught us that we don't deserve to ask them for world-class services?

How are we going to sustain families during this self-isolation period If the situation gets too tough? This is the window period to think!! My people, we shouldn't let it hit us before we plan for it.

America with the lowest level of poverty is supporting its citizens with a specific sum of money, but our leaders are comfortable isolating us without food.

Say no to self-isolation without a sum of money to support the citizens.

Mass Communication Student Bags Best SIWES Student Award

Folashade Azeez receiving her award of excellence
Clarion Olusegun

A student of the Department of Mass Communication, Adekunle Ajasin University, Afolashade Azeez has been awarded as the best student of the 2018/2019  Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).

The award of excellence was presented to her on Thursday during the 2019/2020 SIWES orientation programme.

In an exclusive interview with our correspondent, Azeez described the achievement as a dream come true and a deserved one.

According to her, bagging the award was a function of her determination, hardwork and deliberate attitude to work.

She said, " During the last year SIWES orientation, an award was presented to a lady, who was also from the Department of Mass Communication. Then, I told myself I could also get it; this moved me to do the needful. Probably, other students were present, but my own intention was getting it. So, I was very happy when it came, because I put in my efforts and I got it. In fact, the orientation we had before we left for our industries really helped me to work harder.

Talking about her challenges, she said " My major challenge was faced when my first industry-based supervisor was changed, and I was attached to another person who wouldn't take me to events as a reporter. This made me walk up to other reporters in the organization, so they could help me perform my duties diligently. They all did well by taking me to events for reports.

She further advised all SIWES students to set their priorities right and be true to themselves.

Azeez added, "If you are sincere to yourself, there is nothing you cannot achieve. Don't deceive yourself "

SamPraise-Led Administration To Provide Campus Shuttles and Cabs.

Toluwalope Adebayo

The Immediate Past President of Adekunle Ajasin University Students' Union, Samuel Adesomoju, "SamPraise", has announced his administration's partnership with the Blue Cab Transport Company to make more shuttles and cabs available on campus.

According to him, 5 new cars and 6 14-sitter buses will soon start operations within the environment of the campus.

Adesomoju stated this recently while giving his handing-over address during the inauguration of the 2019/2020 Students' Union leaders.

Speaking on other achievements of his administration, he said, "Our administration was able to achieve not only a peaceful tenure, of which no member was suspended despite situation warranting such.

" Other achievements were: opening of the portal through out the two semesters we served, back end registration penalty fees was reversed from N5,000 to N2,000 for each semester in the last session, reduction of field trips and departmental association fee to a unified amount of N1,000, scrapping of faculty dues, reduction of practical fees, agitation for constant power supply in which an agreement of at 6 hours power supply  for academic works was reached, freshers' game, freshers' orientation, face of AAUA, academic tutorial, inter-faculty debate from office of AAUASU Vice President, collaboration with Itel Mobile to organize dance competition during the last student Union week."

However, SamPraise lamented the low allocation of funds to the Students' Union.

According to him, funding the Union will help it to embark on human capital projects other than incentives.

Adesomoju further noted the increment in the school fees, and the inability to provide poverty alleviation scheme for students witnessing financial issues, as challenges faced in office.

Olakanye Oluwafemi, popularly known as Catalyst, is a musician and song writer. He shares his journey into music with Emoruwa Glorious

How did you launch into music?
I started writing songs at age 13. My parents were supportive from the start, so that was a big push to my passion. They always gave me that lift. Also, I am happy I am into music because it's my number one joy. It gives me real joy when I see people singing along or playing my songs- it's a beautiful thing.

How many songs have you released?
I have been featured in over 9 songs, written over 20 songs, and released four personal owned tracks namely;
Catalyst ft Thowbias, Lizgutsy- Mega Super Star
Catalyst Ft MC Dekola-Mumu Button
Catalyst- All Night Long.
Catalyst - For You

Which of your songs do you consider your best?
I don't have a best song. I just feel I put my best into every song I put out; for my fans to like and fall in love with. I recently dropped another song titled- ''For You". It's another song that means so much to me.

I am currently a Mass Communicator in training, and I have the passion for my course of study. However, I would link whatever I am doing to entertainment, because entertainment is everything to me.

What is the weirdest or funniest question you’ve ever been asked in an interview?

Alumni Tales: I Made A 5.0 GPA In 400 Level- Toluwanimi Thompson

Toluwanimi Thompson is a graduate of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University. In this interview with Toluwalope Adebayo, she talks about life during and after school.

How will you describe your journey through the university?
My journey in the university was a great one; I had good, bad and ugly times.  There were moments when I felt I was studying the wrong course. This was because I really wanted to study Mass Communication, but I was admitted to study Political Science. However, that didn’t stop me.

In all, the university was a whole lot for me, because I learnt so many things within the four walls of the university. I had amazing friends and relationships. It was basically growing and learning through life.

Kindly talk about you low and high moments as an undergraduate
My highest moment in school was my final year. I have always enjoyed the final era of whatever I embark on, and I am grateful my 400 level wasn’t an exception. It was the high point of my stay in the university academically, spiritually, emotionally.
It was in my final year I made a 5.0 GPA; in the first semester, I made a 4.8 GPA, and in the second semester, I made a 5.0.

Spiritually, I got to know God in a better way and got more spiritually aware. Emotionally, I was in the best relationship of my life at the time. That year was basically filled with sweet memories for me.

Talking about my low point, in my 200 and 300, I had amazing roommates (for lack of a better word) that showed me tough times. Also, academically, my 200 level wasn’t the best of all.

What was your most memorable moment as a student?
My most memorable moment was when I failed a course in my 200 level. As an understanding student and noticeable character in the class, it was a big blow to me and surprising to my classmates. That period was a trying one for me. I was just crying, and couldn’t even imagine myself retaking a course.

By default, I went to the lecturer’s office to know what the problem was, and thankfully the issue got rectified, and I was given my original grade.

How were you able to overcome academic challenges?
Basically, I was able to do that through determination and the willingness to pay the price. Nothing good comes without a price. You have the pay the price, make sacrifices; not necessarily in the biggest thing.

Also, I was less distracted by social media. The internet at Akungba was bad, so it didn’t afford me the opportunity to waste so much time online. I was able to invest my free time into reading.

Can you describe what life as an graduate is?
Life as a graduate is not what people actually think it is. It is totally different from what we think. I would not be able to define what life really is for everybody because life is relative; one's experience is different from someone else’.

Being a graduate involves a process of
growth and learning. In the past few years, I had become more self-aware and realized my growth, weaknesses, strength, and who I really am. I thought I knew myself, not until somethings happened to me. Life will definitely happen to you whether you like it or not.

What advice do you have for undergraduates and people who want to get to university?
First of all, as an undergraduate,  I will advise you to know what you want out of life, be determined, and let your heart be opened to learning. Note that it is important you read a lot. This is because when you graduate, a lot of things are going to be happening to you at the same time.

I feel like being in the university is that time of your life when you have the full capacity to control your time. The moment you graduate and get a job, your employer dictates what time you should be at work and what time you shouldn’t be at work.

Also, I feel this is the time for you to build yourself and your capacity. Expose yourself to the right people, read the right information. Relationships can never be overrated. You need to network as much as you can, because you don’t know who will be of help to you in the future. Don’t leave a bad painting in anybody’s picture. When issues happen, work towards resolving them and building fantastic relationships with people.

Lastly, it is very important you get serious with your studies. I know we are in an age where you don’t necessarily have to go to school to succeed. But I am sorry to burst your bubble, your degree is very important. If it is not important to you, it is to your parents or sponsors.

"Students' Unionism in AAUA Is Not A Child's Play" - Folacare

The former Students' Union Government President of Adekunle Ajasin University, Folakemi Adaramola recently had an exclusive interview with Roland Bayode and Clarion Olusegun. She talked about her personal life, revealed her eachievement in office and many more.

Can you tell us your background?

I grew up in Lagos, Iyana paja to be precise. I attended primary school in Kusholu area of  Iyana Ipaja. My secondary school was Government Senior College, Agege, Iyana Ipaja.

How were you able to win  2018/2019 SUG election?

When I was a 100 level student, I never had the thought of aspiring for any position in this institution. But, when I got to 200 level, my friend persuaded me to go for the post of my department's vice-president, because of my boldness and smartness. At first, I declined but I later succumbed to the pressure. Fortunately, I contested and emerged. All of these happened in 200 level second semester. In 300 level, I emerged as the Vice-President of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences.

When I decided to vie for the post of the SUG Vice-President, I started meeting with the past leaders, who advised me to create good relationships with students.

I did as instructed, and to God be the glory I emerged as the Vice-President of the 2018/2019 Students' Union Government.

What actually motivated you to vie for political positions at different points in time?

My passion was education; I don't take it with levity. After persuasion from friends, I had to get my department's constitution to read on the duties of the vice-president. It was after doing that, I realized the position was related to academic welfare; which is what I love. I resolved to contesting for the position because I knew the office would give me the capacity to help people.

In summary, I contested for the post of the vice-president because of my passion for education, not because of my friends' persuasion.

During your campaign was there any event that could be termed 'memorable'?

Yes. While I was contesting and election was a few months away, a guy saw me at the big gate and said to me " You cannot emerge, winners are always from my faculty. How do you want to do it? You cannot emerge, I heard you have been campaigning and all that, but you cannot emerge. You know sciences have technology at hand and know how to control it. Don't just disturb yourself, it's better for you to step down."

I felt bad on that day and started thinking. However, I had to put myself together, and believe that with God all things are possible. I chose not to dwell on what he said.

What was your reaction when you emerged as the VP?

I was very glad when I emerged. I thought of seeing the guy and telling him that " You said I will not emerge and have emerged, what can you do? Will you take your position back? God is on my side o, and I eventually emerged."

How will you rate yourself as a vice-president?

The point is that I can't castigate my predecessors, they tried their best. It's only when you are not in that position that you blame those that are there. If you are not in their shoes, you talk anyhow.

Students' unionism in AAUA is not a child's play. You can't just go there and just do whatever things you want to do. I could remember when I asked my predecessor why she didn't do anything apart from tutorials. She told me she was willing to do somethings but there was lack of fund. However, when the fund came in, it was late, and she couldn't do anything.

Now to my own tenure, I had a lot of programs in my mind, but I was able to achieve just two, because there was no adequate fund. But, I can still say it categorically today that, I did much better than my predecessor because she never did anything academic aside from tutorials.

I did an academic program for all AAUAites, that was the inter-faculty quiz and debate competition. Tutorials were also organized. Although, I had plans to do other things but there was lack of fund and sponsors.

I also visited the GST and ENT lecture theaters and units regularly to lodge complaints. But, these were selfless services that cannot be counted as achievements.

I couldn't just do something that won't make much sense at the end of the day. I wanted to do things that I would pen down somewhere, and urge the present administration to start from where I stopped.

How do you think the present administration can tackle the problem of low funding?

I mentioned earlier that my predecessor and I faced the issue of inadequate funds. However, I was able to weather the storm, because I wanted to do something. In all sincerity, getting finance for the event was not easy.

Above all odds, I didn't look at if money was available or not. I was just focused on doing something.

I just hope the present Students' Union Vice-President will be able to achieve more than what I achieved. Although, it is not easy.

What was the best reward you got from students or anyone while in office?

My best reward for service was gotten during the inter-faculty quiz and debate competition. One of our students, who is a comedian, that day climbed the podium and said " I know Folacare very well, and I have never thought she could do something like this. I have not heard about something like this in the history of AAUA. You deserve some accolades for doing this." That comment made my day.

What advice do you give to potential female aspirants, since politics?

A scholar said politics is everywhere; even in the human mind, he practices politics.

Politics is not something we should say a male should have a larger rate of participation while females should step back. In politics, there should be equal representation.

In the world we find ourselves here in AAUASU,  it is the other way round. Thus, I will advise females with political ambitions not to limit themselves to aspiring for the position of the vice- president. In 2013/2014 administration, the General Secretary, Omolola olola, was a female.

I will also beseech them to do what is right and just. Because when they leave, it's what we did while in office that will speak for them.

As a female, most people believe that you must get involved in some dirty games to practice politics. It is mostly said that it is not what you know, but who you know. Did you engage in such?

This question is an issue I want to address among females that are aspiring for posts; departmental, faculty and SUG levels.

Whenever aspirants meet me and declare their ambitions, I advise them never to engage in filthy things that will tarnish their images. This is because if you do it or not, they will say it. Just don't let us do it, so as not to put yourself into what you keep.
feeling sad about whenever you remember.

You have just a few months to spend in office. We call it a selfless service, why do you have to engage in dirty things before you attain that position?

How much were you able to cooperate with other executives?

I worked hand-in-hand with other executives. Before I did anything, I informed and carried them along. I related with the President the same way I related with the Financial Secretary and others.

Do you have any mentor?

Yes. My dad is my mentor.

Can you tell us about him?

My dad is a civil servant. He is a person that cherishes guidance and doesn't want any mistake to occur. If anything wants to occur, he is my 2nd consultant, after God. Even before I declared my ambition to contest for any post, I told him, and he said we should pray first. Thereafter, he told me to go on, that God was at work and I would definitely emerge.

Do you have any life-changing experience that actually changed?

Yes. Before I gained admission, I was at home for 3 years. I became tired, and I had to start attending vigils and changing my orientations about what have been doing earlier.

There was a particular day I went for a vigil and we were told to tell everyone goals that we had been pursuing. On this day, I told everyone that I had been seeking admission for the past years and needed everyone to pray for me. I promised that if God did it, I was going to come back to testify to the glory of God. Interestingly,  It was that same year I gained admission. I can never forget that day.

SUG President, Comrade Obagunwa Oluwasegun

BEING A SPEECH DELIVERED BY THE 18TH DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE MOST IDEOLOGICAL STUDENT’ UNION IN AFRICA, ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY, AKUNGBA AKOKO, ONDO STATE, COMR. OBAGUNWA OLUWASEGUN DANIEL (SUPREME) ON THE OCCASION OF THE ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY STUDENT’S UNION INAUGURATION ON THIS DAY 17TH FEBRUARY, 2020 AT THE OLUSEGUN OBASANJO MULTIPURPOSE HALL.

Protocols,
The Ag. Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar, University Librarian , Dean Student Affairs, Deans of all Faculties, All H. O. D’s present, My parents, Council of AAUA Past Presidents, NANS Zone D, NANS JCC, Ondo State Axis, Security Personnel, Gentlemen of the Press And of the Greatest Nigerian Student.

I am here today humbled by the task before us as a result of the victory at the just concluded Students’ Union election held on (date) grateful for the trust put on us and care of our true value as a union. I will love to start with a sincere and profound gratitude to the Creator of all creatures, the Almighty by whose mercies and might we are gathering here today. I will like to appreciate the Acting Vice-chancellor in the person of Prof Olugbenga Ige for his fatherly support in all ramifications, Registrar, Librarian, Bursar, Dean of student affairs, Dean of all faculties, Head of the departments, Fellow AAUAITES, all protocols duly observed.

We are here today, not for my victory but a celebration of AAUAites desire to equip the union which is the medium for emancipation and development of our university. For I have sworn before you and Almighty God today never to forget the struggle of our heroes past.

As the 18th democratically elected president, I wish to commend the efforts of all past Union leaders that have paddled the affairs of this great union successfully. You will agree with me that the union has gone through turbulent periods owning to vested interest but these leaders did their best in establishing and maintaining the Union we can be proud of.

The world is very different now. As a human, we are saddled with the responsibility to abolish all forms of injustices and to overcome all challenges confronting our noble union.

You will agree with me that without Students, there might be no lecturers and definitely no university management and with this, student must be treated right and their perspective must be adequately listened to by the management while formulation and implementation of the University policies since they are at the receiving ends of any policies made.

We want to categorically state that the leadership of Comr Sampraise has done wonderfully well in discharging his duties and ensuring that the academic calendar of the University remains attractive and accurate. But then, like Oliver Twists, we will continue to build on the good foundation laid by past leaders to ask for more in other to ensure that the students of AAUA will continue to be treated as kings and queens in their respective departments and Hostels. Our administration will engage the University management at all time in different ways. One will be to partner the University in areas we should work together to make AAUA not only the Best State University in Nigeria, but the Best University in Nigeria. Two in loco parentis in terms of providing adequate, effective, efficient and timely welfare services to the entire students. These will include:

1.Addition of more shuttle buses on campus to reduce waiting time in accessing various infrastructure and lecture halls on campus.

2. Construction of Bus stops from  faculty of Social and Management Sciences to the new faculty of Arts which will help eradicate the indiscriminate stop over of the shuttle buses and also protect AAUAItes from the scorch sun of Akungba Akoko.

3. Upgrading of backend registration requests from letter writing to e-application which will reduce delays and invariably reduce errors.

4. Re-introduction of internet service across the campus to aid learning and research among students of AAUA.

5. Extension of power supply on campus. We understand the power supply challenges in the Nation, but we are asking that we have power supply from 4pm-6pm on Wednesday’s-Friday’s in addition to the normal daily supply.

6. State of the lecture halls, particularly the LT A and LT B, Law LT and other Tetfund buildings should be renovated to suite a 21st Century University, properly called.

7. A recent applauded development at the bursary in the payment of backend charges, Certificate fees etc needed to be improved upon, as the use of POS machine with just two bursary staff are not enough to accommodate the huge demands from students, which has caused majority of our student and alumni to queue up for hours at the Students Affair village. Our administration is recommending that the students be allowed to pay into the account and present the payment slip and sun shield be erected at the Students village.

8. Security of our student remains important, and we are asking that the state government lease with the University host Community to beef up security in Akungba Akoko.

We are inaugurated today but unfortunately we don't have a secretariat to carry out our duties and functions as Students' Union Leaders.
The state of our Students' Union Building is very bad.
We really appreciate our amiable Vice-Chancellor for the visit to the Students Union building recently and we beseech the management to help us fasten the process of renovating the Building for us to be able to serve the Students.

As we won’t relent until we have achieved all these set goals with the vision of erecting a lasting foundation for effective Students’ Unionism in AAUA. Hence, we crave for the support of the University management and stakeholders in every aspect.

Let me use this medium to congratulate everyone who contested at the just concluded poll, we have come thus far, we can continue to come together no matter where our camps belongs to make our University the very best.

Together we can Make AAUASU our pride.

Thank you.
Long Live AAUA
Long Live ONDO STATE
Long Live NIGERIA

SLAVE TRADE; STILL EXTANT IN A MODERN WORLD

 Esther Oguntuase

The illegal migration of people out of Nigeria to find their Eldorado in this contemporary world, can be likened to the transatlantic slave trade. The business of trading human for either money or asset is a very distressing recurring trend in this decade.

Slave trade had begun in the late 15th century in Nigeria. In 1971, Portuguese navigators in a bid to tap the Saharan gold trade, surveyed West African coast as far as Niger delta, and traded European commodities for local crafts, as well as slaves. The latter turned out to be highly lucrative. Nigerians sold themselves off, in order to benefit economically. From the last third of the 16th century to early 19th century, more than 3.5 million slaves were shipped from Nigeria to North and South America, and the Carribean colony.

The devastating effect of slave trade in Nigeria was the degradation of social, political and religious structure and the nascence of a war among the Yoruba city-states, over the control of slave trade.

As a result of the economic crisis in Nigeria in present time, those seeking to escape from the clutches of hunger, poverty, insecurity and unemployment had either been led astray or willingly decided to travel through illegitimate routes out of the country, in order to avoid the huge amount they would have paid to the Immigration Service. Some travel through the desert, while others go through the Mediterranean Sea, with no assurance of them living to tell the story. Most of these victims end up in the slave market with their dreams shattered.

Most times, the victims are females, who had been taken from their homes under the guise of going in search of a job opportunities. They end up travelling through illegal routes and being sex slaves.

It can be said that slave trade is still thriving, and modern-day slave drivers are on the move to enslave  vulnerable migrants, as it is still considered a lucrative business. Research has shown that countries like North Korea, Burundi, India, Pakistan among others, are involved in the enslaving millions of people through debt bondage and forced marriage.

Virtually, slave trade is not just history, as many people who were sold during the 350-year span of the transatlantic slave trade, are in forced servitude today.

Although, repatriation agencies are involved in ensuring the provision of refugee relief and assistance to repatriates, victims of this modern-day slavery are still unable to settle down in the country.

It is sad that the cause of this problem can be traced to unemployment. The cost of living most African countries cannot be afforded by majority. Hence, the unemployed are forced to seek greener pasture. Unfortunately, these people end up being victims of  the “new slavery.” Without doubt, if our economies are stable and people are employed in the labour market, the need for an Eldorado is zero to none.

The Best Way To Love Your Val

 Esther Afolabi
The celebration of Valentine's Day is no doubt a day everyone looks forward to. It is comes as a reminder to show love and affection to your lovers, family and friends. It is also a day to reminisce about the good relationships you have had with people. At the end of the day, many relationships enjoy fresh love.

The history of Valentine's Day can be traced to a certain Roman priest named "Valentine". He was a priest who conducted weddings secret for soldiers who had been banned fro marrying by then Roman Emperor. According to the Emperor, marriage made the soldiers weak. Unfortunately, his disobedience was known to the priest and St. Valentine was sentenced to death for this cause.

Love can be very sacrificial, homely and often times, makes people perceived as being hard-in-heart become soft-hearted. Valentine's Day is surely a day to celebrate love; not just love, but true love. Now if you are trying to know how best to mark it or express your love and appreciation to your romantic partner, friends, family members, there are no specific rules to it. Going for a dinner date, movie night, or hosting a Valentine Day’s party are all good means of celebration. However, ensure any display of affection interests the other person.

Expressing love on Valentine’s Day should be selfless, just like the protagonist did and not the other way round. Today, many have totally missed it, because of the misconception of what this day is about. It is heartbreaking to hear statements like: "Eight months after Valentine's Day we will  see protruding stomachs everywhere ", "Many girls will  get deflowered today." This shouldn't be, love should be celebrated with maturity, deep affection, respect one's subject of affection, and appreciation. Therefore,  this auspicious day called Valentine's Day is expected to be remarkable for everyone, bringing a smile to the face and happiness to the heart.

Valentine's Day: Public Share Opinions On Celebration

By Friday Omosola

February 14th is definitely the day that differentiates the month of February from other months of the year. I mean, who forgets that St.Valentine is celebrated on this day.

This day got its name from a famous saint, but there are several stories about who he was. The popular belief about St. Valentine is that he was a priest from Rome in the third century AD.

Historically, Valentine's Day originated when Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. Valentine felt this was unfair, so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret.

After Claudius found out about the secret marriage, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death.

In the jail, he fell in love with the jailer's daughter, and when he was about to be executed on February 14th, he sent her a love letter signed " from your Valentine."

Just as St.Valentine died as a man of love and someone's daughter Val, people often believe that this day must be celebrated with people or someone who means so much to you. It is no cliche that anyone who is in a relationship wants to feel mushy and extremely loved on this day. Ladies and guys often fantasize about the chocolate, romantic messages, social media posts, surprise parties, gifts and all acts that can invoke the reaction "awwnnnn." Sadly, some people belong to the school of thought that if any of these fail to happen, the love is yet to be true.

In this piece, our correspondent samples different individuals opinions on how best Valentine's Day should be celebrated.

An accountant, Mr Oluwagbenga Ikuyimino said making love on Valentine's Day is not a restriction for married couples, since they have been joined together as one.

He added that since the day involves buying and sending of gifts to loved ones, it is no news if couples made love.

A student of the Department of Accounting, Adekunle Ajasin University, who pleaded anonymity, stated that the exchange of gifts and hangouts are not essential, since love is shown every day.

On his part, a 200 level student of the department of Mass Communication, Adekunle Ajasin University, Eniola Morenikeji Mary said Valentine's Day is meant to be celebrated in the church.

An HND2 student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Agbelusi Ilesanmi David stated that Valentine's Day is meant for the expression of affection, especially romantic affection.

However, he noted that this can be done through the gifting of cards, and not lovemaking.

In a phone interview with a graduate of the Department of Mass Communication, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Oluwatosin Kolawole reiterated that valentine's day was made for love, not lust.

She added, the celebration of the day is not necessarily between lovers, but among friends and church members.

Also, an HND1 student of Computer science Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Owo, Adebayo Julius opined that the day is designed to honour the saints (repented sinner).

"There is no Valentine's Day celebration without the exchange of gifts," said a resident of Akure,Ondo State, Damaris John

"Contest For Other SUG Positions", Folacare Tells Female Aspirants

By Roland Bayode and Clarion Olusegun

The Outgoing Vice President of the Student Union Government, Folakemi Adaramola, known as "Folacare" has called for an equal representation of gender in the Adekunle Ajasin University Student Union Government.

Lamenting that females have limited themselves to vying for the post of the vice-president, she urged all female aspirants to attempt contesting for other SUG positions, as none  is gender specific.

Adaramola stated this during an exclusive interview with our reporters recently.

She said, "In politics, there should be equal representation. In the world we find ourselves here in AAUASU, most  females aspirants often limit themselves to contesting for a specific position. Who told them that this should  further exist?

"In 2013/2014 administration, the general secretary, Omolola Olaola  was a female. This is just to tell you that any SUG position can be contested for irrespective of your gender."

She further corrected the notion that female aspirants must engage in promiscuous and dirty acts to win elective positions.

According to her, no political position is worth tarnishing one's image  for.

"Also, most people believe that as a female you need to involve in some dirty games for you to involve in politics. It is usually said that, it is not what you know, but who you know. What do you want people that know to say about you?

"In class, we have the excellent students and average students. You can graduate with a first-class if you chose to. However, adhering the school rules and being dedicated will determine the success of your stay on campus.

"The result of your first examination determines the kind of foundation you have chosen to lay. Show good attitudes to your studies and you will graduate with excellent results."

On his part, the Acting Chief Security Officer, Mr. Seye Alademomi urged the new students to avoid joining any secret cult on campus.

He also stressed that no form of indecent dressing will be tolerated within the school.
