Barely 4 days to 2020/2021 Students' Union Government Election, students were greeted with the news of its postponement.
Unfortunately, the screening of aspirants was about to start when the announcement was made. Obviously, it must have left the aspirants and students in a state of disappointment.
The election was earlier announced to hold on June 16, 2021
While the Students' Union Election Committee noted that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige cited the security situation of the country at the time as a reason for the postponement, the Dean of Students' Affairs, Dr. Olusegun Owolewa, noted the management didn't approve the announced date because it collided with the 2021 United Tertiary Matriculation Examination, which held at the Computer-Based Test Center of the institution.
It's almost 1 month, and agitations have been ongoing for the conduct of the election, as aspirants and politically conscious students believe that the present Students' Union administration has overstayed in office and a new administration should be voted in.
Also, the SUG constitution provides that the election should be conducted in the second semester. Hence, this provision must be respected.
Meanwhile, another reason for this agitation is the alleged underperformance of the Supreme-led administration. Students have criticized the SUG President, Comrade Oluwasegun Obagunwa, for lack of accountability, refusal to hold a congress lately, embezzlement of funds, and not fulfilling most of his agendas for office. Also, the recent distribution of the relief materials donated to accident victims without knowledge of the students' populace continues to raise suspicion and calls for accountability of the administration before it ends.
As the clamor for the election looks like a battle that would soon be won, there is also dissatisfaction amongst students that it could result in the possible postponement of the second-semester examination scheduled to start on July 12, 2021, if conducted.
Since the school management decides when both exams and election hold, we all keep our fingers crossed and trust it to make the best decision with the interest of all students at heart.
