AAUA Truck Crashes Female Hostel Fence

The collapsed fence.

Friday Omosola, Boluwatife Adedokun

A truck belonging to Adekunle Ajasin University Water factory rammed into the fence of the Pioneer female hostel, last week

The accident led to a partial collapse of the fence.

According to an hostelite, the cause of the accident is still unknown and has not been traced to the influence of alcohol, smoking, or brake failure.

She said, "We were in our hostel last week when we heard the sound and after rushing down to the scene, we saw the fence has been broken by the vehicle. We saw the driver trying to reverse."

Another student stated, "If am right, it happened before the fearless concert held on Sunday 25th of July."

Meanwhile, the hostelites stressed the need for the reconstruction of the fence, stating security reasons.

A student who pleaded anonymity said, "We paid our school fees, as well as the hostel rent, and I do not see any reason why the management is not doing anything concerning the affected area".

"I am still wondering why the management has not dived into action in the past one week of its collapse. We are females and we need to be protected."

However, ECHO MEDIA gathered that the blocks for its reconstruction have been arranged.

Also, the officers at the hostel refused to comment on the issue.

WE FORGET THINGS TOO QUICKLY, BUT JANUARY 23RD 2021 WILL FOREVER REMAIN IN OUR MEMORIES

Scene of the January 23rd accident

SÈYÍFÚNMI FRANCIS ADÉỌ̀ṢUN (FRANCOFONE)

The earth stood still at the awful site of where I call the slaughtering alter where promising lives were slained as a result of carelessness from some quarters, their only offense was trying to make a living and be better citizens.

Anyone who visited the scene of the accident that happened just after the main gate of ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY AKUNGBA-AKOKO, on the 23rd of January, 2021 will irrespective of how hardened his heart is, feel cold.

It was a very awful site that no one prays to see again.

Several lives were lost to this accident. Of course, no one would have ever thought such could happen, probably because "no one knows tomorrow"

On the 24th of same month when students learnt and confirmed those who were victims, with particular references to Adesomoju Samuel Olúwa tóbi (Sampraise) who was the immediate past president of the students union, and Ogini Precious who was a departmental president at that time, the streets went agog, emotions were flowing like a river, penetrating the heart of as many, forcing water to gosh not only from their eyes but almost every part of the body.

It was the song of the moment that heavy-duty motors be stopped with immediate effect. This was not merely a bluff as a barricade was erected just at the entrance of the town from Ìkàré axis.

For a while, this worked and there was no influx of heavy-duty motors. This development gave the residents of the community a bit of respite.

Unfortunately, months later, the barricade was broken and made temporary. Before the twinkling of an eye, our land is greeted with the presence of these heavy-duty motors again.

In fact, it's as if they have gone for reinforcement and called for backup as they now move in chains.

Despite the decision of the university management to relocate the main gate of the school, which of course was a very sound decision, the fears are gradually becoming increasingly more dreadful.

It will be recalled as well that sometimes in the previous year, a very awful accident happened that claimed many lives, which led to the relocation of the market.

Various individuals have been raising concerns on this issue but it appears the appropriate authorities are not concerned yet.

I have come to realize that in this part of the world, we wait and wait until the same thing happens again before we take steps.

What ordinarily is avoidable might eventually ruin another generation because of the lackadaisical attitude of the powers that be.

Students and stakeholders have made known how concerned they are about this development, but their agitations are greeted with threats. This was demonstrated by men of the Nigerian Army who shamefully took some of our peacefully protesting students, agitating that something is done on the road. Well, thanks to those who stood and saved the arrested students from harassment.

What can be more pathetic, those agitating are described as hoodlums who are only focused on raising dust and causing chaos in the town.

More heartbreakingly, those who we are supposed  to run to are allegedly aware of the situation of things but are showing the "I don't care attitude"

But just like the familiar Yoruba saying that *ẹní bà lòmọ́* that is, you can only tell if it hits you, they see nothing wrong in their actions, majorly because they are or were not majorly affected by the previous accidents.

Yes, we forget things too quickly, but the 23rd  of January, 2021 will never depart from our hearts. We will keep in mind that it's not only a deliberate act but an act of wickedness that those who are supposed to protect us are slaying us.

Anyone seen to be clamoring against the passage of the heavy-duty motors will automatically become the enemy of some people who have seen this as a means of livelihood.

May I state it once again that it's not a fight against anyone, it's not a fight for the dead even, but a fight for our own dear lives, so DON'T BE UNFORTUNATE.

It is not heard of that when accidents happen some species of human is selected as victims, rather, it takes anyone, irrespective your status, so get some SENSES.

Some persons would even say, "but an accident is not happening now" this shows the level of intelligence of such people though.

We have argued that since there are other places those trailers can pass, then they should leave Akungba community out of their route.

As well, we believe that it is Expedient that the state government or any appropriate authorities, work on the road and or even dualize it.

Without any iota of doubt, we have said it often that if the road remains like that, the possibility of accidents not happening is zero, not even when our street is been paraded by heavy-duty motors daily.

It is on this note that I join my voice with that of everyone to call the attention of appropriate authorities to look into the fears of the people and not just promise but act on the road.

Our lives are in danger!

The life of man is sacred and no one deserves to die as a result of the carelessness of another person.

Let it be on record that we called for a proactive approach to this! Ire o

AAUA Students Berate SUG Over Absence At Protest, Arrest of Students

Students during the protest

Josephine Adetula , Peter Emmanuel, and Friday Omosola

The students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, have expressed grievances over the absence of the Students' Union Government executives, and the arrest of students at a protest today.

The protest tagged "SAY NO TO HEAVY TRUCK IN AKUNGBA", was staged by students against the movement of heavy-duty trucks through the Akungba road.

ECHO MEDIA gathered that none of the SUG executives, including the President, Comrade Oluwasegun Obagunwa, was present for the protest.

Also, men of the Nigeria Armed Forces stormed the protest ground and arrested 13 students.

The soldiers alleged that the police officers at the scene called for the protesters' arrest, after accusing them of blocking the road.

At the time of filing this report, the students arrested have been released.

Also, many have described Supreme as the worst SUG President in the history of Adekunle Ajasin University.

However, the students praised the Immediate Past President, Late Adesomoju Sampraise, for leading the agitations on the reduction of tuition fee after it was hiked by the Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu in 2018.

A student said, "We miss our hero and regret having a mediocre as the current No 1 student of AAUA."

In an interview with the Dean of Students' Affairs, Dr. Olusegun Owolewa, he noted that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige has promised to take necessary actions on the agitations of students.

He added, "The Ondo State Government has promised to dualize the road."

AAUA Luminaries Equals OAU Giants at HIFL 16th Round

The man of the match, Olaniyi Muyiwa been presented his gift

Abraham Isaac

The much-anticipated football match between the Luminaries of Adekunle Ajasin University, and the Giants of Obafemi Awolowo University ended in a barren draw yesterday.

The round of 16 first-leg of the Higher Institution Football League was held at the AAUA Sports Complex, Akungba Akoko.

The return is expected to be played at OAU Giants' home on July 28, 2021.

The game saw AAUA Luminaries register no shot on target, while their opponent got just one.

Speaking with journalists, coaches of both teams expressed their opinions about the game and what to expect from the next leg.

OAU Giants Coach, Chike said, "We are happy about the draw, but that wasn't what we came for.

Also, he expressed disappointment at the state of the football pitch.

He said, "We will be playing on a better surface at home. This pitch shouldn't have been approved for a football match. So, when we get there, we will play our best."

However, AAUA Luminaries' Head Coach, Abuo Joseph assured that his team will defeat OAU Giants on their home soil in the second leg.

He further added that his team has the right mentality and they are a better team.

EXTRA: Will AAUASU Election Hold? Agitations Continue As Exam Approaches

Barely 4 days to 2020/2021 Students' Union Government Election, students were greeted with the news of its postponement.

Unfortunately, the screening of aspirants was about to start when the announcement was made. Obviously, it must have left the aspirants and students in a state of disappointment.

The election was earlier announced to hold on June 16, 2021

While the Students' Union Election Committee noted that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige cited the security situation of the country at the time as a reason for the postponement, the Dean of Students' Affairs, Dr. Olusegun Owolewa, noted the management didn't approve the announced date because it collided with the 2021 United Tertiary Matriculation Examination, which held at the Computer-Based Test Center of the institution.

It's almost 1 month, and agitations have been ongoing for the conduct of the election, as aspirants and politically conscious students believe that the present Students' Union administration has overstayed in office and a new administration should be voted in.

Also, the SUG constitution provides that the election should be conducted in the second semester. Hence, this provision must be respected.

Meanwhile, another reason for this agitation is the alleged underperformance of the Supreme-led administration. Students have criticized the SUG President, Comrade Oluwasegun Obagunwa, for lack of accountability, refusal to hold a congress lately, embezzlement of funds, and not fulfilling most of his agendas for office. Also, the recent distribution of the relief materials donated to accident victims without knowledge of the students' populace continues to raise suspicion and calls for accountability of the administration before it ends.

As the clamor for the election looks like a battle that would soon be won, there is also dissatisfaction amongst students that it could result in the possible postponement of the second-semester examination scheduled to start on July 12, 2021, if conducted.

Since the school management decides when both exams and election hold, we all keep our fingers crossed and trust it to make the best decision with the interest of all students at heart.

This was made known in a press release by the Chief Press Secretary to the Ondo State Governor, Richard Olatunde.

The release followed the approval of his appointment by the Governor, Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu(SAN)

The release reads, "Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has approved the appointment of Professor Ige E. Olugbenga as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko".

DANGER: HOW SAFE? MORE TRAILERS PLYING AKUNGBA ROAD DESPITE BARRICADE

Scene of the January 23rd  accident

The unfortunate accident of January 23rd, 2021caused by the Dangote Trailer is still fresh and yet to be recovered from but then, the movement of trailers plying the Akungba road despite the barricade is becoming alarming.

Over five months now, the Management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko has put the main big gate under lock as a measure to decongest the regular human traffic. It came after the January 23rd accident that claimed lots of lives.

Recall that in October 2020, a trailer load of rice rammed into the people at the market and killed several people.

Later in December, two trailers collided with each other, causing fire accidents. It left many injured with few deaths.

All these accidents were caused by trailers and were within the university's main gate area.

Are the students still safe?

January 24th, 2021, a day after the Dangote Trailer accident, the students alongside community leaders erected a barricade at the outskirt of the Akungba community to prevent heavy-duty trailers from plying the road.

On several occasions, the barricade was lifted and opened to trailers to come in; which the students have vehemently complained about.

However, it is considerable to say that some trailers need to come into Akungba community to deliver goods. However, this can be done at late hours of the day and they can as well pass another route (the Iwaro-Oka road).

One cannot determine when an accident would happen, but measures can be put in place to avert unfortunate accidents.

Of recent, it is observed that more trailers are plying the Akungba road- the same road that has been barricaded to prevent trailers. It is obvious that some persons are behind the unlocking of the barricade, thereby allowing trailers to move in at any time. It can also be said that some persons are also demanding money from the trailer drivers to allow them ply the route. This is bad and inhumane.

Sadly, students are bearing a bulk of this danger.

There must be an immediate step to meet with any authority in charge of the opening of the barricade for them to stop it to protect the lives of students and residents of the community.

The students must as a matter of urgency- to prevent a repeat of previous accidents, speak in the language that the concerned authorities would understand.

We don't want a repeat of previous accidents.

This is a wake-up call to safeguard and protect the life of the people and the students, especially.
