The Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Prof. Olugbenga Ige, has advised students and new executives of the AAUA Students' Union to handle pressure from fellow students in a dynamic way.
He spoke at the swearing-in ceremony of the elected Student's Union executives which held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Multi-purpose Hall (OBJ).
He emphazised that they should desist from violence and always thread the path of peace, dialogue, and negotiation when addressing issues.
He said, "Let me remind you that violence through ALUTA or any other guise is no longer fashionable in the contemporary world of union activities. I, therefore, advise you to always toe the path of peace, dialogue, and negotiation in addressing issues. From my experience as a former student and academic unionist, it is not unlikely that you will experience pressure from your fellow students, and as leaders, you must be dynamic in handling situations under such circumstances,"
He stated that the new executives should count this opportunity as an avalanche of training and learning practical leadership skills to enable them to leave a good legacy for posterity.
He further charged the executives to run an exclusive administration that will carry every member of the Executive and the Union along in all matters, including finance. He also affirmed that the Management is ready to provide the necessary support for the smooth running of the Union.
"One of the easiest ways to run into troubled waters as leaders are not to be clear and transparent in handling finances. Your election is an opportunity to show how well you can manage men and resources. On our part as Management, our doors would be opened to you at all times, we are here to make the stay of all students as stress-free as possible. My door will be opened and rest assured of our necessary support,"
Prof. Ige however praised the Election Committee, in collaboration with the Student Affairs Division, security personnel, and other stakeholders for conducting a successful election.
Meanwhile, the President, Ogunsanmi Kolade Olumide, in his speech assured that their administration shall continuously engage and partner with the management towards promoting positive results in Unionism.
He said, "It is essential to note that we are not coming on board to be anti-management but to unequivocally represent the interest of the students and to represent every form of justice,"
Ogunsanmi however implored every student to work with the new administration towards achieving their goals with efforts to birth their campaign promises, some of which are to ensure deliberate and sustained partnership with telecommunications companies to bring about free internet access to the institution; to encourage student entrepreneurs; to renovate the Student Union building; to introduce the usage of solar as an alternative source of powering the institution and to ensure a conducive environment for learning.
