AKUNGBA FLOOD: HOW FEMALE STUDENT WENT MISSING, OTHERS INJURED

...AAUA Final year student missing

By: Feranmi Okuku

A final year student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA) has been reportedly carried away by flood caused by the heavy downpour in the late hours of Monday.

Doyin Boluwaji, a 400 level student from the department of Religion and African Culture in the institution was said to have been carried away by the flood which invaded her villa (Package Villa).

A victim of the flood who identified herself as Oluwaseun Ademilua, a student of the department of Linguistics (400 level) spoke with ECHO saying that that current of the water was so high that the walls of the room started collapsing.

She said, ' I stay in the first room by the right in Package Villa. Doyin was the one that alerted me of the flood the rain was causing. So I started moving all my things to the top of my wardrobe, but it was not up to a minute before I realised that my room was filled with water already; so much that it was even lifting me up."

"The next thing we heard was the wall of Doyin's room collapsing and current became faster. Some of my neighbours that were already on the ceiling pulled me up with them. Doyin was with her boyfriend(Damilola) in the room but water has locked the room and they couldn't come out."

"They were holding hands and holding on to something but the force of the water pulled Doyin away."

She continued "A while after our Landlord came and tried to calm us down and also rescue Doyin but water also carried him."

She added that this was not the first time they had experienced something like that.

In her words, "our villa was also flooded second semester last year and we lost some properties then but it was not as bad as this. The Landlord tried to do some things after the first incident by constructing rings to curb the flood and drainage too."

A female student who pleaded anonymity who is neighbour living beside the villa said, 'I went to charge my phone in their villa because they switched on generator. The rain started around 7 in the evening but with time, it became heavier and flooded into their passage, so they had to switch off the generator. But they overlooked the water that was in their passage because they didn't think it would be more than that. I left the villa when they switched off the generator but rain also entered rooms in my villa (Character Villa) and we had to shift our valuable properties.

"We later learnt that students in Package Villa had to break the ceiling as a way of escaping the destruction water was causing. Her hands slipped off when she was trying to grip her fellow student's hand who was already in the ceiling. The landlord also in the process of trying to save her slipped and got carried away but was later found."

David Olasugba, 100 level student in the department of Plant Science and Biotechnology who stays in Peace Villa told ECHO that they were alerted by others tenants when the flood started.

He said, "Immediately we opened the door, the water gushed into our room, we only had the opportunity to bring out valuable things like our certificates."

He pleaded with the institution to help in finding a way to construct a drainage in their area.

The Landlord's daughter with the name Funmilayo said that Doyin (the missing student) was the one who called the landlord before he was also swept by the flood.

"Sister Doyin called to tell my Dad about the flood. When we got to the house students were already climbing into the ceiling. In an attempt to save sister Doyin he (landlord) slipped. We thought water already carried him away too but like 3 hours later we saw him hiding on the Cocoa tree and hanging on to it, waiting for the flood to reduce. He was taken to the hospital this morning.'

The Students' Union President of the institution, Comrade Samuel Adesomoju said the incident was such a sad one saying that the houses were too close to water.

He explained that "according to the environmental law you don't build your residential houses very close to water."

The union president said he has spoken with the Dvc Academics, Prof. Gbore and a search team has been coordinated for the search of the girl because her life is so precious and "hope that she survives this."

He added that the incident would have been averted if there were enough hostels in the institution

"This incident is as a result of the inadequate hostels on campus. The source of all this problem lies with the management. The one opposite health centre has been completed for the past 6 months but yet to be commissioned," Comrade Adesomoju said.

Dr. Matthew Idoko, the Chief Medical Director of health centre, AAUA said most students came into the health centre out of anxiety and only two students were injured.

"Only two had some serious injuries and were admitted till this morning that they were discharged. As at this moment, we don't have any accident victim in the ward, they have all been discharged," said Medical Director.

Dean of Students' Affairs on the other hand, Dr. Olusegun Owolewa said the management has permitted affected students to scout with their friends in the institution hall of residence.

He also explained that the completed hostels will be commissioned before the commencement of next session.

RECKLESS DRIVING : AAUA STUDENTS LAMENT MGT SLOW ACTION

... Student Pleads For Urgent Action

Students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko have lamented the failure of the management of the institution to see to the reckless driving of some motorists plying the routes leading to the school gate.

They students made this known in their grievances after the death of one Yusuf Esther who was involved in an accident.

They said if the management had not treated the issue with kid gloves and measures had been put in place the life of Esther would not have been lost to the ill-fated accident.

ECHO had reported the concerns raised by the students of the institution last week before the ill-fated accident on the need for the management to put some mechanicism in place to curb reckless driving on the road.

Speaking with ECHO, some students stated that with the accident that occurred somedays ago it has become more important for the school to urgently act in order to ensure the safety of its students.

Gladys Akinlade, a 200level student of Political Science Education said the alarming rate of road accident recently in Akungba is not creating a good image for the institution and its environment.

She said "the school management should find something to do about this issue. Come to think of it, we only here of victims that die as a result of toad accident, they should also remember that some victims who are also students barely escaped death because of the recklessness of these bike men. They don't have to wait until someone dies."

''The recent incident of the death is yet to receive any immediate action from the school management. I was hoping something would be done as soon as possible to curb such thing from reoccurring," Gladys added.

Another student, Opeyemi Ayeni (400level) from the department of Computer Science said she hoped that the sad occurrence will not repeat itself again because it was a shocking one.

She opined that the bike men were at fault. In her words, “the bike men are reckless and they exhibit an annoying 'I don't care' attitude.”

She added that the school management should find away to curbing the excesses of all transport workers in Akungba.

She suggested that the school management should create awareness for the bike men and sensitize them about the dangers of reckless driving.

Fayokemi Aribisala, student of History Education, however, enjoined all students to be careful in the selection of bike men to board and also caution them when need be.

She said, ''as scared as I am now, I can't say I won't board bike again. So please let everyone be careful of the kind of bike we board, make we shine our eyes.''

"The school management should also carry out either sensitization for both the bike men and students. They should place bumps where necessary on the roads. It is ridiculous that accident rate has to reach this rate at all.''

Olamide Ogunlade, a 300 level student from the faculty of law has said the occurrence saddened the hearts of AAUA students.

She added, “I can’t really say exactly what caused the death, but from the facts I heard, I want to believe it is the reckless driving of the bike man that caused the whole mess. The government actually had failed, because ordinarily such place around market should have speed breakers (bumps). But knowing the environment we are, the bike drivers obviously do over speed, many at times drink to stupor.”

Eucharistia Ariyo (200level) from the department of Biochemistry said the death of Ayokunumi Esther was very painful.

She lamented, “the government not constructing a good road in a town where there are students, is a very bad thing. Constructing good road where students are should be their primary duty. Like Medoline road and Adefarati road are very bad. Let me say they are road to hell. Reckless driving has become a norm for the bike men these days.”

She urged students to be careful of the kind of bikes they board and also be watchful and prayerful.

AAUA TUITION FEE: THE POLICY THAT AFFECTS ELECTORAL PROCESSES

The sudden increment in the tuition fees of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA) has brought more harm than good to both parents and students.

Students who ought to participate in Students’ Union elections are overtly absent, and this is due to the unfavourable policy adopted by the school management.

The student populace has been going through some unpleasant situations ranging from unpalatable living conditions in the hostels, insecurity, and lack of students welfare among a host of others. The introduction of the new policy of “No Payment, No Voting” by the school management has taken away the tiny ray of hope students have left.

The rule prohibits students who have not paid their tuition fees from participating in the annual Students’ Union election.  Also, it stops them from contesting for any post in the Students’ Union. This negates the lofty ideal of the institution which prides itself as the 21st Century University Properly Called!

Ironically, this millennium is particularly popular for its democratic nature. Former US President, Abraham Lincoln defined democracy as government of the people, by the people, for the people. In this case, it is government of the students, by the students, for the students. When this important function is missing in a democratic society, then what we have is a society that is ruled by autocracy.

According to the Britannica Encyclopedia, “voting gives people opportunity to have their say and, through expressing partisanship, to satisfy their need to feel a sense of belonging. Even non-voting satisfy the need of some people to express their alienation from the political community.”

However, in this case, it is the school management that has decided to alienate majority of the students from the political community of the institution.

A free and fair election can only be achieved where people are given equal chance of choosing their leaders. Apart from that, people should also be given equal right to contest for leadership positions, like a popular saying goes; variety is the spice of life. The act of choosing a leader is a critical issue and must be treated as such.

Countries and nations in the past have either been destroyed or exalted due to the leaders ruling them. Much power is conferred on a leader because “to whom much is given, much is required.” Therefore, elections must be conducted with appropriate fairness.

Considering the exorbitant tuition fees, it is no surprise that many students find it difficult paying their fees. Using the payment of tuition fees as prerequisite for exercising voting rights is unfair on the part of the students because sooner or later students will pay up their fees, it’s a condition that must be fulfilled. The infringement can only be termed as a deliberate act to rob students of their franchise.

Therefore, to live up to the standard set for itself as the 21st University Properly Called! the restriction placed on students’ voting right should be removed to allow students exercise their franchise and elect leaders who will take the institution to greater heights.

It must be noted that democracy is not government of the rich, by the rich, for the rich, but of the people, by the people, for the people, hence, every bona fide student should be allowed to take part in the forthcoming election.

BUILDING YOURSELF OUT OF INFERIORITY COMPLEX

   By: Dorcas O. Aluko

Have you ever met someone who places a large emphasis on what people say about him/her?

Or an individual that feels he does not have any say or whatever his contribution is, it won't bring anything positive?

If yes, you have encountered a person with the  psychological disorder titled "inferiority complex".

Inferiority complex is a sense of belittling oneself. It is the feeling that one is inferior to others in certain aspects or the quality of being disadvantaged.

It is as a result of low self-esteem and have systematically taught people to hate themselves, their religion and even their cultural heritage.

According to Adeyemi Henry - a life coach,  "about 52% of Nigerian youth suffer from this disorder." He also claims that half of this percentage are females.

In another survey done by the Department of Psychology, Olabisi Onabanjo University, it is affirmed that about 70% of people who should suffer inferiority complex are from Poor background but have direct contact with people of high calibre overtime.

People with inferiority complex always treat people more importantly because in their words, they are unimportant.

They forget that everyone is a different combination of positive attributes and flaws and tend to subject themselves to other people's opinion which easily kill their morale. Bleaching of one's skin is a big evidence of this.

Since inferiority complex comes from the mind,  the best way to deal with it is to overcome it right from the mind.

This can be done by confronting your feelings, realising that your flaws are not as bad as you think, stop wanting to be like others, focusing on your positive attributes and building self-confidence.

Surrounding yourself with positive people is another helpful tips to kill this disease that can eat up one's life and stop one from shinning.

EXCLUSIVE: AAUA Coach Give Reasons For Poor Turnout of Students In Sports

By: Aluko Dorcas and Promise Obatyo

The gymnastic coach of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA), Mr Joseph Abuo has lamented the poor turnout of students in sporting activities.

In an interview with ECHO MEDIA, Mr Abuo said the students are meant to participate in sporting activities.

He said: “We just want students to turn up for sporting activities if not for competition but for fitness purpose."

While reacting to questions surrounding the state of the pitch, the coach pointed out that it would soon be upgraded.

“The pitch is okay because we use it for playing Dean’s cup, VC’s cup and others. Although there are problems but they can be solved. The pitch needs a little re-grassing, upgrade of facilities and proper maintenance of equipment which will be done very soon,” he added.

A team captain, Progress Afolabi who is a 200 level student of Geography and Planning Science said that the school hardly provides sporting materials for training.

He maintained that there is "low turnout of students to sporting activities because of lack of encouragement from the school management.”

He added that the school management should wake up to their responsibility.

In the same vein, 100L Roseline Adebori, a student of Health Education pointed out that basic amenities are not available.

“Our lecturers are doing a great job even without the needed equipment. The equipments we have is not balanced."

" There should be first aid in case of injuries and modern equipments for fast learning but they are not present here,” she said.

Damilola Olubeba, a student of the department of Health Education opined that the raining season is the reason why the school management is yet to repair the bad facilities.

He urged the school management to commence the repair as soon as the rainy season is over.

RAPE SOLDIER DISMISSAL: CORONATION OF A BANANA REPUBLIC(Opinion)

By Akinademola Emmanuel

It has been subsequently quoted that an "injustice to one is a threat to all" .Going by the the trending news of that soldier who was indicted and was not tried before the court of justice but allowed to go Scott free.

Nigeria is a developing country and this would be a dent on the image of the Army who are supposed to guard the sovereignty of a state end up perpetrating injustice .

However this would not be the first time that soldiers would use the privilege of their uniforms to manhandle civilians and abuse their rights .Are we still aware that we are not in that jackboot military era ?

The impairing of Democracy in our great country is highly disheartening. Is the voice of the people still the law? We are aware of scar or the aftermath of rape on victims but none have experienced how bad it feels on rape ,some victims even end up committing suicide.

Pigs would fly if we allow this case that should be taken with utmost profoundness to be swept under the carpet and forgetting the voice of the people .

# We want justice
#And this must be done
# we are not in a banana republic

Sexual Assault: A Menace That Must Be Put Behind Bars (EDITORIAL)

Sexual assaults have been on the rise, dating back to a decade ago; where numerous rape incidents and other immoral sexual behaviours were reported.

Findings from a National Survey carried out in 2014 on “Violence against Children in Nigeria”, confirmed one in four females reported experiencing sexual violence in childhood with approximately 70% reporting more than one incident of sexual violence. In the same study, it was found that 28.8% of females, ages 18 to 24 years experienced sexual abuse prior to age 18 of which 5.0% sought help, with only 3.5% receiving any services.
In spite of judicial deterrent, cases of sexual assault, especially rape are not declining in our society.

True to this claim is the recent rape incident which involved a 300 level female undergraduate in the department of Religious and African Studies at Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, and her assailants, members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, who were stationed at the military checkpoint at Ikare-Akoko in the State where the incident happened.

Ironically, these are the set of people who should be maintaining law and order in the society, as well as, protecting human dignity.

This shows the height of lawlessness among members of the public, not excluding law enforcement personnel.

According to the Nigerian constitution, rape is punishable with life imprisonment. But, how many rape cases have been tried in the court of law? And how many persons have been convicted of rape?

The answers to these questions will remain unanswered. A study on “Trends and Patterns of Sexual Assaults in Lagos South-Western Nigeria”carried out in 2016 showed that only 2 out of 40 cases of rape are reported, attributing this low turnout to the arduous legal requirements needed to prove the cases and the associated stigma.

History is about to repeat itself with the fresh rape case involving a female undergraduate of AAUA.

Although, report from the Nigerian Army stated that one of the suspects, identified as Lance Corporal Sunday had been arrested, no significant action against the assailants has been taken yet.

In light of this problem, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu issued an order to the army to transfer the case to the police for further investigation and ultimate prosecution of the offenders.
The reduction of sexual assaults is possible with collective efforts.

The government should work hand-in-glove with institutions, individuals and associations that are committed to preserving the human dignity.

The society has a major role to play in ensuring it provides a favourable environment which will enable victims of sexual assaults speak up and seek help without fear of harassment or stigmatisation.

In addition, prompt court actions against culprits must be put in place to discourage others from committing the crime.

FIGHT AGAINST SUCIDE AND DEPRESSION: SADAF SENSITIZES AKUNGBA COMMUNITY

By Promise Adagba

Suicide and Depression Awareness Foundation (SADAF) carried out an exercise to sensitize Akungba-Akoko society about suicide and depression on 3rd August.

The exercise which was titled: Walk against Suicide and Depression was embarked on to create awareness about the dangers of suicide and depression and how it can be prevented. Students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA) trooped out with placards that read thus: Suicide is not the solution; Beware of Depression. In groups, they went from one place to another which included the market places in the community.

ECHO gathered that the society, especially the market women accepted and applauded the walk, being first of its kind in the community, a market woman who identified herself as Afusat said she was glad she had the opportunity of being enlightened about suicide and depression.

"We all know the rate of youths committing suicide nowadays, and it's worrisome especially in the university community where there is stress and pressure so we deem it important to do a kind of awareness against depression and suicide", said Olorunsanu Godspower, a student who participated in the walk.

Another participant, Oluwadamilola Oluwafemi, the president of the Nigerian Campus Journalist (NUCJ) AAUA Chapter opined that there is more to life than committing suicide.

“Just like the saying, ‘when there is life, there is hope’, only the living can achieve the purpose of being here on earth. One thing some people fail to know is committing suicide (killing oneself) is not only a crime against the law of the country, but a sin that we tried to let the people know.

" The aim of staging the walk is to reduce the level at which people commit suicide by orientating and providing them with information on what suicide is as it has no positive effect," said Oluwadamilola.

The State Coordinator of SADAF, Samuel Abodunrin said the walk is aimed at creating awareness about suicide and depression and also, educating people on the need to keep hope alive.

In his words, "we were able to talk to people one-on-one and some of them poured out their minds on this issue and we were able to bring back hope in them by Gods grace.

"Also, our movement was filled with speakers who could speak to motivate people out of depression, and also our different banners bear inscriptions which are enough messages to the populace to desist from committing suicide and depression."

"Feedbacks from after the walk from people who were able to reach us confirmed that our goal was achieved."

Samuel Abodunrin who is a 400 level student of mass communication department in AAUA appreciated all the participants and sponsors of the walk.

ARTICLE: Some Sunshine In The Rain

SOME SUNSHINE IN THE RAIN

By: Muneer Yaqub

I understand democracy can't be yanked off us at this stage. We're so lapped up. Quite fundamentally. Otherwise, I'd have moved that we find for ourselves some other governmental system. Save frustration and desperation, and other 'tions' that end turmoil and sorrow, we've earned nothing in the last twenty years of doing this. Our Democracy has morphed savagely: a government of some people by some people and for some people.

The rest are objects of kidnap and banditry, mobbed and robbed, rid of their lives and hard-earned possessions. But some others here are suffering and agonizing, yet wake up every morning chanting the names of those bloodless rulers, and sometimes in gruesome kerfuffle with their antagonists. If truly this is Democracy, methinks, we've been conned. It's not working—for us!

Democracy looks innocent and fair, easy, but crazy. A blend of what-nots, of those tyrannical systems we think we'd left behind, a resurrection of those colonial monsters we believe had vacated our shores. A recipe of anarchy, of totalitarianism, of dictatorship. A revitalization of those brutal junta years, of those thorny khakis and gagging jackboots, of a freedom of speech trapped in papers but free behind bars.

In his Prison Notes, "The Man Died", Wole Soyinka spoke of how brutal and bloody the military days were and how, in spite, some of them still dared to speak up. "The man died in he who keeps silent in the face of tyranny," he crooned. But if those who laid their lives fighting for democracy had known what would later become of their sacrifices, maybe they'd have had a rethink. Was it really worth dying for? Those junta days Soyinka was busy describing in his notes still endure. A few elitists have continued to hold us folks to ransom, living exploitatively off our toils.

Democracy seems a coloured offshoot of the lives we'd left behind, the days we thought had vanished, at last, from our shadows. But The Man has continued to die in us, over and over again. For this version of tyranny which democracy has availed us—in the form of celebrated corruption and indifference towards people's safety—are huge morsels in our throats. We try to speak about them but we're confused: where do we start from?

A classmate has just been released from captivity, he was kidnapped on his journey here from home. He's missed some exams. Only God knows whether he wouldn't be needing an extra year to make up for this lost. So nowhere in this country is safe anymore. But who's playing these road? Them? No. It's us. It's our brothers and sisters. It's our friends and kids. And it's us at risk of losing our lifetime savings to huge ransoms while trying to rescue them.

So when I see some folks here glorifying our leaders, singing their names as if all is well, making it look as if we're the ones raising false alarms, dismissing our cries as mere wails and tagging us miserably as 'wailers', I raise my hands to the sky and say some prayers, that one of their loved ones be abducted. Maybe then, senses will begin to sprout, from their careless bootlicking brains..

An Important History You Must Know About OAU

By: Gideon Ajose

Did George Iwilade a.k.a Afrika Kill Himself?; A Historical Reconstruction of July 10, 1999

• Every Society is a Product of Struggle - Pius Adesanmi
• The trees of Freedom are always watered by the blood of Traitors, Enablers of Traitors and Martyrs alike - Anonymous

Just like that, it has been 20years since Afrika and 4 others were killed on OAU campus in a night that would never be forgotten in the history of the Institution. This was a night when dare devil cult members of the Black Axe members numbering up to 40 did what seemed like a 9/11 attack on OAU Campus, I guess you already know all these and I am not here to tell you what you already know.

First is the issue that George Iwilade was a Member of Black Axe Confraternity; this allegation is usually peddled by revisionist who always try to paint the young hero as a villain, it was said that Afrika was killed for in-house disagreement that occurred when he was continually apprehending the members of his Fraternity, this allegation falls flat on the ground in view of historical facts that Afrika was a member of the Kegites which at that time on OAU Campus was the biggest campaigner against Cultism after the Students' Union, also another allegation was how the Students knew Cult Members were having a meeting at the Staff Quarters where Guns, Axes and Machetes were recovered which led to the build up of July 10. The Union isn't a person neither is the Union simply the Executive, the Union had so many intelligence officers all around, Both on Campus and off Campus and were very instrumental at apprehending them!

Did Wale Omole instigate the Murder? In the face of accusations, The then VC had a connection with the cult guys, some even alleged that he was their patron, this is further buttressed by account of meeting with the cult members days before the attack, some however have alleged that the Cultists felt offended by Afrika's challenge to their patron and killed him as a result without prior knowledge of the VC, Some even said the Cultists were out to protect one of their own sponsors by ensuring that all the students who stood against them were eliminated.

All these conspiracy theories have a simple answer and that is the simple fact that the VC, Bursar and Financial officers couldn't explain the amount that was released from the school account days to the attack that was received by on of the Cultists. No amount of rejoinder can ever absolve Omole from Afrika's Death! How come all the Telephone lines of all Security men on Campus wasnt active during the attack? Where did the cultists pass when they were going and when they were coming in? All these are still begging for answers!

It has been 20years and on, Afrika, Eviano and the other three students Blood who were gruesomely murdered are still seeking for Justice, Nigeria's justice system failed them and it is currently failing us.

Another menace is here especially with the issue of #WinterInOAU, to think that some people died for this campaign against Cultism and Cultists allegedly sent threat to OAU is nauseating, the Students' Union remains the only platform to combat exploitation, Cultism, oppression and all form of social Vices on Campus.

It was the Union that called the Mother of all Congress in the wee hours after the attack that captured all the assailants, it was also the Union that agitated for the Dualization of the Lagos Ibadan Expressway, it was the Union that sufficiently regulated the prices of goods on campus, it was the Union that saw to the rescue of Dipo Fashina (Jingo) when the DSS came to kidnap him, it was the Union that regulated the prices of bike and 'Town-Igbaro' on campus, it was the Union that ensured that Mozambique queens weren't assaulted by Porters, it has always been the Union that has been our shield even in the Face of doom, Students must collectively demand for a Democratic Union and do all it can to protect it from political Jobbers and fools seeking relevance. Only the Union can successfully protect it's members, every security check put in place by the Management is to be corroborated by the Union.

Before I go, OAU was shut in 2015/2016 session not because of OAU Students' Union but because the Management couldn't agree on who becomes VC, the excuse of the Management for the continuous Proscription of the Students' Union has outlived it essence, We need our Union Back.

AAUA Mgt Vs Union: Heavy Security Deployed To Scare Students Away From Congress

By Phillip Anjorin

The management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) has deployed security personnel into the campus to prevent students from holding a congress.

ECHO recalled that the students union called for a congress on Monday, June 10 which coincidentally was declared by the management as the resumption date for academic activities.

'The Congress was later put on hold due to security concerns and advice from security experts', said Comrade Babalola David (Sir Babovid), the Public Relations Officer of the union.

This was after the management released a circular on Sunday evening forbidding the students from proceeding with the Congress and warned the students that disciplinary actions will be taken against offenders.

Members of the Police force and Mobile Police (MOPOL)  along with their vehicles were heavily deployed at the University Main gate, Sport complex gate and within the campus vicinity to prevent the allegedly cancelled congress from holding.

While speaking with our correspondent, a 400 level student from Law department who pleaded for anonymity criticized the management for taking such action.

She said, "How can they bring in such number of officers when we're not criminals?! Truth be told, the management are scared of another protest erupting from the Congress if the outcome is not favourable to the students. I believe that the fear made them take such drastic actions."

She further blamed the student Union for not carrying the students along with their plan.

She criticized them for hiding the outcome of the previous meetings with the government and governing council while praising the student union of OSUSTECH for being clear in their decision making.

Meanwhile, AAUA management has set June 9 as resumption date and June 17 for examination.

This decision has been countered by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) saying the No Reduction No Resumption policy will remain.

JUST IN! FEE SAGA:NANS Tells AAUA Students To Abide By No Reduction No Resumption

By: Our Reporter

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ondo State chapter has said that students of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko should disregard the resumption date announced by the school management and follow the No Reduction No Resumption Policy.

This was contained in a statement obtained by ECHO  which was signed by the NANS Ondo JCC Chairman, Comrade Adebowale Adewumi 'Rugged' on Friday afternoon.

Recall that ECHO reported the resumption date schedule as annouced by the authorities of AAUA on Thursday afternoon. The schedule stipulates June 9 as resumption date and June 17 for examination.

In his statement,  the NANS Chairman said:

"It is my delight to first appreciate the entire Nigerian Students, parents, market women, sympathizers, stakeholders and those who for whatever reasons joined us on this titanic struggle to save our educational institution."

"Unfortunately, time is no longer on our side especially as we have special challenge - our unwillingness to pull our resources and work together as students of the same institution without any designation as to who is from where; whether OSUSTECH, AAUA, FECA, ACOED etc"

He urged the students to disregard the circular by the management saying it is a way of distraction.

"2. Secondly, the second paragraph of the circular says that the student should resume on campus for the remaining part of the first semester on the 9th of June 2019. We urge our students to disregard this circular. The attitude of some of these managements gave us a focal sign that they are the enemies of now and the future to come as they are only trying to distract us."

Comrade Adewumi said the students will remain resolute in the decision of #No Reduction No Resumption.

He said: "We are confronted with the apparent inability of the authorities to adopt and implement meaningful solutions as we still stand on the policy of NO REDUCTION, NO RESUMPTION. In a lighter vein, we are currently appealing to the state government on the increment looking at it from the economic angle and the political and security implications."

He further maintained that all security agencies in the state are aware of all activities and the students have been laws abiding.

"I will also like to inform you that all security agencies across the state are officially carried along starting from the Director of State Security, the Commissioner of Police among others. This is necessitated by our orientation as law abiding citizens," NANS  Chairman maintained

He noted that "If we are not to turn our backs to our past blunders, then we must sincerely and diligently fight for qualitative education."

THE MEETING

Meanwhile,  a source revealed to ECHO that another meeting is being rescheduled for Monday 10th of January to discuss the review of the fee.

And also,  an update received from Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa revealed that the meeting which started around 3pm with the stakeholders was welcomed with different suggestions and  new decisions .

However, no circular has emanated from the AAUA Students Union in the last 24hours.

FOCUS: The Before And After Of Tuition Fee Saga With ODSG, Postponed Meetings

Tuiton Fee saga has rocked Ondo State for several months and still ongoing. Some students of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko are already taking a look at the rescheduled meeting to hold today, June 6. ADAGBA PROMISE looks closely at the the situation as well as talking to some students.

Recall that the  tuition fee meeting with the Ondo state government has been postponed twotimes now with the third one to hold today.

The meeting has been rescheduled to  hold today with Stakeholders that are concerned but the question is, WILL TUITION FEE MEETING HOLD WITH ODSG?

Taking you down memory lane before the three days protest held in Akure city, President of the Nigeria Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Comrade Bamidele Danielson  heard about the hike in tuition fee in Ondo state and that instigated his coming down to Akure to dialogue with the Governor but it ended on the rough side.

After so much consultations  and message for dialogue with Ondo State government which was not favorable, a three days peaceful protest was staged in the State capital -Akure involving AAUA and OSUSTECH.

During the three days protest the Students Union Government was called by the Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi for dialogue.

They were are asked to stop the protest that the tuition fee would be review but the union insist that until they take the step and rewiew committee is set the protest will continue.

After the three days protest the Student Union was call on for meeting with the Ondo State Government through the SA to the  on Youth matters,  Banji Adewumi.

Upon reaching the venue of the meeting, the meeting was postponed but a date was picked, the date picked happens to be Children Day-May 27.

A day to the date the SA contacted the Union telling them the meeting would not hold due to Children Day;  another date was picked which was May 28

The meeting was held with the Deputy Governor .

The Union President, Comrade Adesomoju Samuel SAMPRAISE said in a statement obtained by ECHO:

"We presented our few minutes argument and facts before the Deputy Gov. He (deputy Gov) did say Governor was briefed about our meeting to hold today and he did appreciate that he will love to have the full house in the next meeting including the Vc's and Governing council of both institutions."

The statement continue:

"The said meeting ended in about an hour later because  we started 3: 37pm and left the Government house some minutes to 5PM with solid agreement that the comprehensive meeting will hold to make final resolutions next week, Thursday, 6th June, 2019."

Today, while putting a call to some of the Students Union executives in AAUA they are of the opinion and optimistic that the meeting will hold with Ondo state government.

AAUAITES OPINION

SOLOMON  DAMILOLA

"Let's be optimistic and let's hope the meeting will hold with the government today."

Fidelis Miracle:

"this meeting has been postponed three times now I don't think anything good can come out of it, well let's be hopeful."

Kayode Badmus:

"Do we even know if Mr governor is around well let's be hopeful."

Through the analysis of the postponement of the meeting all this while in which Ondo state students have waited hopefully for weeks at home, we at ECHO are all optimistic that the meeting with Ondo  state government will hold today 6th June and  yield positive result.

TUITION FEE SAGA: After Postponing Date Twice, Will Ondo State Government Meet With Stakeholders Today?

Tuiton fee saga has been rocking in Ondo State since the coming to Government of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN. The state owned institutions are faced with one controversy or the other. FERANMI OKUKU (EDITOR OF ECHO MEDIA)  writes on the meeting to be held on June 6,after been postponed twice.

The big question on the mind of every students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) is whether the meeting with Ondo State government will held today June 6, as rescheduled .

The meeting is to hold between Ondo State Government, Students Union Leaders of AAUA and OSUSTECH with the Governing Council of both schools.

The meeting is to discuss the tuition fee saga that led to several protests in both schools and the combined forces that protested for Three days in Akure,  the state capital.

ECHO can authoritatively confirm that the postponement of the meeting on two different occasions has not made it easy for students to be optimistic about today's meeting- and the outcome.

However, it is a fact students can't stay at home forever.

The state government will also have to state its decision regarding the grievance of the students either out of consideration that the academic calendar should not be delayed further or just to fulfill all righteousness.

It could be recalled that the meeting was postponed from May 27 till May 28. The reason for this according to the SUG president of AAUA was that the slated date was on Children's Day and the Governor was occupied.

The SA on youths and education, Comrade Banjo Adewumi also said it was due to "Logistics reasons".

The second meeting which was supposed to be held on the 28th was postponed based on the fact that the deputy governor wants a full house which we hope will include the governor himself and the Governing Councils.

ECHO gathered that the Governor was attending the Inauguration ceremony in Abuja and the Deputy Governor was going for the House of Assembly Conference in Lagos. Hence the meeting only lasted for few minutes with the Deputy Governor who later announced the postponement.

On the basis of a good name which we believe the Governor still cherishes a lot, the meeting should  hold today.

The only question we don't know the answer to yet is whether it will turn out in the favour of AAUA students or not.

We anticipate what the meeting holds.

As at press time,  ECHO confirmed that the Union leaders are getting ready for the meeting.

FOCUS: AAUA Tuition Fee In The Past, Present And Future

On the reduction of school fee saga as earlier released by the AAUASU President, Com. Adesomoju Samuel (Sampraise) concerning the meeting held with the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi, that the final resolution will be make in presence of Vice Chancellors and Governing councils of Adekunle Ajasin University and the Ondo State University of Science Technology.

Let take you back to the Press Release earlier released by the Management  of Adekunle Ajasin University as signed by  Opeoluwa Akinfemiwa, the Acting Registrar of AAAUA, concerning the increment in school fee and protest.

1. There is no new increase of school fees in AAUA (Which means the management  are vividly with the opinion  that not even a dime is or was added to the school fee)

2. Current school fees in AAUA range between N80,000 and N150,000.

3. The students are allowed to pay twice i.e. between N40,000 and N75,000 per semester. (An additional  advantage to ease payment)

4. The demand during the recent protest of students was for the University to allow those who have not paid their school fees to write tests/examinations while they pay their school fees later. (The student's union agitations and demand was against the reason for the protest)

For the avoidance of doubt, the schedule of school fees charged in AAUA, with effect from April 2018  range between N80,000 and N150,000 per year, depending on course or level of study.

The above figures were negotiated with relevant stakeholders, including the students and their parents, and finalized in April last year. (That is, the students, parents &  stakesholders had previously  agreed and concor to the payment without any doubt)

Lastly Management  of Adekunle Ajasin University said, "It is instructive to note that almost a session has passed since then and students have paid without any issue.

It is, therefore, surprising that some people (That is, the AAUASU Representatives) are now coming up with issue of reduction in school fees, an issue that was negotiated, agreed upon and finalized in 2018, a period of over a year ago.

Management is hereby urging members of the public to note that the school fees payable in Adekunle Ajasin University remain as negotiated with the students since April last year.

All lies, insinuations, and rumours contrary to the above stated facts should be ignored and discountenanced, please.

Adekunle Ajasin University  management however,  have already state their part on the above issue with clear and stable fact and evidences."

AAUA Pro-Chancellor, Dr Tunji Abayomi, on his page on Facebook posted also to state his stand on the issue to:

"Have you compared what is paid at AAUA to the other Higher Institutions in Sothern Nigeria even in State's that are manifestly poorer than our State. PLEASE DO. (He gave his own opinion   based on the fee payed by other institutions despite their low level of economy, yet they paid exorbitant fee to what is being paid in AAUA)."

"At AAUA with 50% of your Tuition paid you are allowed to register. You have the rest of the session to pay the balance. (This point was also argued for by the AAUA Management)."

"MEMBERS of the Disabled community ONLY have to pay 50% of the fees paid by the abled. In the case of extreme poverty NOT pretended poverty you can take a loan from the Student support Office."

"We have also established work study for those who are serious about finding solutions to their study money problem. We are doing our best to build a respectable Institution for Ondo State in a terribly challenging economic time for State government."

Dr Tunji Abayomi however stated all these but some questions need to be asked:

HOW WILL YOU RATE FULFILMENT OF THE INSTITUTION TOWARDS THE COMMUNIQUE/REQUESTS SUBMITTED BY OPTIMUM'S ADMINISTRATION LAST YEAR?

ADVICE/POSSIBLE WAY FORWARD FOR THE STUDENTS' UNION ON THE REDUCTION

SPECIAL ANALYSIS : How Ondo Government Postpone Meetings With Stakeholders Over AAUA Tution Fee Hike

By: Feranmi Okuku

The students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA), have shown displeasure over the hike in tuition fee and the postponement of the meeting with the State Government on two different occasions.

Recall that AAUA tuition fee was increased by over 200% in 2018 by the governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN. The increment led to a three-days protest in Akure, the state capital.

ECHO also recalled that the students of AAUA embarked on another protest on April 24,2019 to speak against the policy of 'No Payment No Examination' by the management. The protest led to the declaration of a three weeks break which has now been extended till further notice by the authority of the institution.

ECHO gathered that the Students Union body of the institution took the matter to demand reduction in their tuition fee. The action was also complimented by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) both Ondo Axis led by Comrade Adebowale Adewumi Rugged and National led by Comrade Bamidele Danielson.

The students took to the streets again to contest the decision of the state governor not to reduce the tuition fee.

It was a combined forces merging with the Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa who are facing similar problem.

It was a three-days protest which was put to a stop on 23rd May, 2019.

ECHO monitored that the protest shutdown the State capital, Akure and slow down economic activities.

According to the NANS Ondo Chairman, Comrade Adewumi, the protest was stopped because the State government has yielded to listen to the students plight.

While meeting with the Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, a meeting was fixed to consist of managements of the two institutions as well as the governing council.

This resuscitated the hopes of Nigerian students that their grievances has been heard and the government was ready to take actions on their behalf.

Their hopes were however dampened when the supposed meeting was postponed twice in a week. The first one was to hold May 27 while the second one was to hold May 28.

However, according to the words of the Special Adviser on Youths and Education, Comrade Banji Adewumi quoted in a release by the AAUA union; the postponement was due to 'logsistics reasons.

ECHO learnt that the second meeting was held for few minutes with Deputy Governor but nothing concrete was discussed because of the Governor and other stakeholders were not on seat.

The meeting was adjourned till June 6.

Meanwhile, the attitude of the Government have been condemned by students and those who spoke with ECHO showed their displeasure.

Ajiboye Stephen, a 400 level student of the institution and President, National Association of Mass Communication Students (NAMACOS) has expressed at the manner in which the state government was frustrating the students.

According to him, "the postponement of the meeting is a ploy by the state government to frustrate student and make them back off from the call for a reduction in the tuition fee. It is surprising that the same state government that called for a roundtable discussion with the Students’ Union leaders and other bodies concerning the tuition fee saga have had to postpone the meeting twice without giving any reasonable excuse. This simply means the state government is not ready to hear the cries of the Nigerian students. We will not be surprised if nothing tangible is achieved at the end of this drama".

200 level student of English Education, Oluwafemi Stephen stated that he expected the postponement of meetings and he was not surprised at all.

"The government has had a tyrannical outlook right from time. I guessed the government is just trying to show who is the boss of who".

Stephen also added that he is not expecting anything positive from the meeting.

Deokin Peter, a 400 level student of the institution and President, Faculty of Arts Students Association, the postponement of meeting is a method used by the government to frustrate Nigerian students and the course that is being fought for.

Deokin who studies History and International Studies, however stated that the protest was not done at the right time.

He said '‘it would have been better if it was done before the commencement of the session or we pend it till the time when the world would need us and need our votes. The protest is justifiable, but there are times and seasons for everything. The student populace is also suffering the burnt with the delay in academic calendar. If we had actually fought for our right in the supposed time, it would have yielded us our request by now."

"But let’s wait and see the outcome of the meeting to be held on the 6th of June".

He noted that the Students’ Union is up to something good, but fighting someone of such calibre requires God’s help.

In anothee interview, Folashade Adesuyi, a 100 level student of the department of Criminology and Security Studies commented saying the government is at a vantage point with the power it has.

In her words, "the power he has cannot close our mouths or stop us from protesting. The Students’ Union will not give up until something is done."

Likewise, the President of the Law Students Society, AAUA, Ayodeji Aimasiko stated that the leadership of the Union is aware that the academic calendar is being delayed.

He went further by commending the Union for the relentless effort they have displayed in fighting for the cause of the students.

Aimasiko also added that he believes something would be done before the union retreat.

The Students’ Union President, Comrade Samuel Adesomoju affirmed that the meeting was postponed to Thursday, 6th June, 2019.

In a statement, he said,The Deputy Governor acknowledged the fact that Mr. Governor briefed him of the said meeting with us but will love to have a full house’.

He assured that the meeting is going to hold, he however added that if there was going to be any die minute change it will be communicated to the union beforehand.

He maintained that the survival of the Nigerian students shall be a major priority.
