Two female members of Echo Media, a long-surviving campus newspaper at Adekunle Ajasin University, have been selected for the 2024 Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP) Campus Journalism Fellowship.
Adesewa Ogunfidodo, a 400-level student of English Studies, and Funmilayo Thomas, a 200-level student of Mass Communication at AAUA, will participate in the fellowship along with 17 student journalists selected from Nigeria and other African countries.
The fellowship will commence tomorrow with a 2-day intensive workshop in Ibadan, Nigeria, where media experts will refine the skills of these next-generation, early-career print and broadcast journalists.
The fellows will be required to write two community (campus) accountability-focused stories to assess their understanding of the program's participation, evaluation, and online mentorship sessions.
Additionally, the fellowship will provide valuable networking opportunities and access to industry experts, aiding the participants in building specialized skills and contributing to the media industry.
Reacting, Ogunfidodo expressed her gratitude, saying, "The zeal to become better motivated me to apply for AFYMP. I never thought I would be selected, but as the saying goes, 'A trying man must meet his luck one day.' It's indeed a great opportunity, and I feel so good."
She mentioned that the fellowship will facilitate her journey into the media industry, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on her career and her ability to contribute significantly to her community.
Similarly, Thomas affirmed her excitement, stating, "It is amazing to be selected for the Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals Fellowship. I'm so grateful for this opportunity to connect with other talented individuals and grow in my field."
She advised fellow students and young media professionals to be determined and seek out opportunities to gain hands-on experience through internships, volunteering, or creating projects.
"Never stop learning, stay curious, be determined, and remain open-minded. Embrace the ever-changing media landscape. Network with professionals in the field, build meaningful relationships, and most importantly, believe in yourself and your abilities. With passion, perseverance, and a willingness to take risks, you can achieve your goals and make a mark in the industry," Thomas said.
