'Don't Shy Away from Politics,' Senator Ojudu Urges Students

By Josephine Adetula

Former Senator of Ekiti Central, Babafemi Ojudu, CON, has encouraged Nigerian students to engage in politics and rectify the mistakes of some political leaders, rather than emulating their bad habits.

Ojudu made this statement recently at the Capacity-Building Legislative Workshop, organized by the Students' Representative Council (SRC) at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State.

Speaking at the Nelson Mandela Hall of the institution, he advised SRC and students to uphold Student Unions and participate in politics with the intention of "cleaning up the dirty game."

Ojudu emphasized, "Search for the best and put them in positions, as they will make decisions that affect your life. Every aspect of your life is influenced by politics, so participate and clean it up if it's dirty."

Reacting to the theme "From Initiatives to Laws: Legislative Competence in a Dynamic World," Ojudu noted the importance of the legislative arm in the system of government.

"Good governance comes from instructive engagement; the government cannot make laws alone. Don't isolate yourself; know how political parties are organized and right the wrongs in the system."

He encouraged young people entering politics to learn from past excellent political leaders and not see themselves as too young. "Don't copy the bad habits of your leaders; educate and prepare yourself for leadership. Be creative, not violent, for yourself and the future."

He advised students to lend their voices, engage digital platforms, and strike a balance between what the legislature thinks is good for the people and what the people want.

Ojudu, however, stressed the need for consistency and persistence in the face of challenges, producing selfless individuals who can exemplify good representation in their generation.

The host, Senate President AAUA SRC, Rt. Hon. Tunde Akingbondere stated that the gathering was the third edition and aims to highlight how initiatives can lead to positive change and make a radical impact on the status quo.

Akingbondere said that being a good legislator means being a good leader, which is why the Legislative Workshop was organized.
